Girls Tennis:

Whew!

That was close.

The Marshall Fundamental girls’ tennis program drove all the way to Santa Barbara to battle San Marcos in the semifinal round of the CIF-SS Division 5 playoffs.

And the Lady Eagles earned a spot in the title match by the skin of one’s teeth.

Marshall and San Marcos won nine matches apiece.

MFHS went 8-1 in singles, and 1-8 in doubles matches.

The Eagles, however, advanced, thanks to a 73-71 advantage in total games.

For those not familiar with tennis, that means, in their 18 matches (nine singles and nine doubles), San Marcos lost two more games over that stretch than did the Eagles.

As mentioned, Marshall was led again by their three singles players.

At No. 1, Hannah Hagiwara, went 3-0 again, by scores of 6-0, 6-0 and 6-2.

Diana Kasabian also won each of her three matches at No. 2 singles.

Kasabian’s set scores were 6-0, 6-2 and 6-2.

No. 3 Elena Edmonds won two crucial matches via scores of 3-6, 6-2 and 6-2.

The Marshall tandem of Sierra Bethelmy and Keri Santiago secured one set victory to guarantee at least nine team wins and that the match would be decided via tiebreaker.

Up next: The Eagles will battle Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy on Friday morning at 11 at the Claremont Tennis Club in the D-5 title match.

The Tologs defeated La Quinta of Westminster, 11-7, in their semifinal round contest on Wednesday.
