Boys Athlete of the Week:
The Bonita High School football program has a number of stars at skilled positions.
And that list includes quarterback Travis Lippert, Texas A&M commit Noah Mikhail (TE/RB/LB), and the University of Washington-bound two-way star, Dylan Robinson (WR/DB).
However, no one played bigger or better in week nine than BHS sophomore, Joseph Lara.
In the biggest game of his high school career, Lara did some remarkable things on both sides of the ball.
After playing its best game of the season, Bonita remained undefeated after a 49-21 Sierra League blowout over their hosts from Charter Oak.
The Bearcats and Chargers had identical 3-0 records as they met up in Covina.
Lara carried the ball 23 times for 177 yards, including a 49-yard TD run.
His ability to sustain drives on the ground meant Charter Oak’s star quarterback Corin Berry spent more time on the sideline than behind center.
He also caught a pair of passes for 15 yards.
And on defense, Lara contributed five tackles and a 40-yard pick six.
What’s really cool about this kid is that he deflects almost all of the credit towards his teammates, and especially the BHS offensive line.
Up next: The Bearcats can secure an outright Sierra League championship next week if they’re able to pick up a road win against a Colony team that is playing its best football of the season.
