Girls Athlete of the Week:
Maranatha junior Mia Huang’s value is far greater than just her on-court prowess.
She is arguably an even better leader than a doubles player for the Lady Minutemen.
This past week, MHS defeated Alhambra, Blair and Duarte in a four-day span.
Over that stretch, Huang and her doubles partners won all nine matches.
Huang teamed up with Madison White twice and Dora Wang made her varsity debut against Blair.
Huang, White and Wang combined to win 54 games as compared to just four for their opponents.
Up next: The Lady Minutemen (6-1) have this week off.
They’ll battle Providence on Wednesday (Oct. 2) and Village Christian (Oct. 3).
Mia Huang’s Doubles Results This Week:
6-2, 6-0, 6-0 v. Alhambra (w/Madison White)
6-1, 6-0, 6-1 v. Blair (w/Dora Wang)
6-0, 6-0, 6-0 v. Duarte (w/Madison White)
I asked Maranatha coach Arthur Hsieh to comment on Huang’s value to his program.
Said Coach Hsieh: “What was particularly impressive was her leadership, on the court and off. In the match v. Blair, White was a game-time scratch, so I paired Huang with freshman reserve, Dora Wang, who made her first start and is learning the game. I played them at #3 to give them a chance to figure things out. The way Huang (our top doubles player) patiently explained things to Wang, encouraging her, correcting her, and rooting her on, was a highlight, as Wang flourished under Huang’s tutelage. There was competitive joy on both their faces as they played. Wang said she really appreciated the opportunity to both play with Huang and to learn from her.”
