Girls Tennis:
The only thing better than winning a first CIF-SS championship in school history is having to clutch up to accomplish that feat.
And the Marshall Fundamental girls’ tennis program did just that.
The Mission Valley League champions opened the postseason with CIF-SS Division 5 victories over Tustin (11-7), Rosemead (12-6) and Carpinteria (12-6), respectively.
But things got real in the semifinal and final rounds.
On Wednesday, the Eagles traveled to Santa Barbara and split their 18 matches with San Marcos.
Marshall, however, would head back to Pasadena the winner, as they advanced on games, 73-71.
The Division 5 final was supposed to be played on Friday at the Claremont Tennis Club.
Apparently, Mother Nature wanted Flintridge Sacred Heart and Marshall to wait another day.
After being rained out on Friday, The Eagles and Tologs met up Saturday afternoon at Marshall.
In what had to feel like Déjà vu, Marshall and FSHA also tied 9-9 after all 18 matches were completed.
And once again, the Eagles won on games.
This time, a 65-63 edge in total games earned Marshall a CIF-SS Division 5 championship.
To make things even more ironic, just like Wednesday’s victory on games, the Eagles singles players went 8-1, and their doubles teams claimed just one win in nine tries.
But it was enough to make history.
Hannah Hagiwara, who plays No. 1 singles, went 3-0 by scores of 6-1, 6-0 and 6-0.
No. 2, Diana Kasabian, also claimed three wins, and she did so by set scores of 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1.
Elena Edmonds got the Eagles two crucial points, going 2-1 in her three matches.
Edmonds set scores were 6-2, 1-6 and 6-2.
The No. 1 doubles team of Sierra Bethelmy & Keri Santiago added one crucial win.
Lexie Palacios & Sophia Alpuche made significant contributions all season at the No. 2 doubles position.
Rounding out the team roster, on deck, and ready to go were:
Parisa Vazira,
Claire Thomas,
Madison Castro,
Arianna Solis,
Maura Mhagama,
Alessandra Santiago,
Lilian Sorto-Lopez,
Tehilah Ofumbi, and
Fatima Vasquez.
