College Baseball:
For the second time in 48 hours, the Mt. SAC baseball program has steamrolled an opponent.
The Mounties opened their 2022 season on Thursday with a 12-3 victory over Victor Valley.
On Saturday, five Mt. SAC pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout and struck out 18 batters.
The Mounties scored eight runs in the bottom of the second inning in a 13-0 victory over visiting San Bernardino Valley College.
Michael Ortega got the win after going the first three hitless and scoreless innings.
Ortega walked one and struck out four SBVC batters.
Kegan Wentz and Damian Torres went two scoreless each.
Wentz got five of his six outs via strikeout, and Torres fanned four.
Hunter Holmes and Anthony Corrales finished off SBVC with one scoreless inning apiece.
Holmes (2) and Corrales (3) combined for five more strikeouts.
The Mounties pitching staff struck out 10 batters at least once, and seven Wolverines’ went down on strikes two or more times.
Nicholas Salgado was saddled with the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) over one inning of work.
Salgado surrendered three hits, walked three and struck out one MSAC batter.
Robbie Mansour walked, had a two-run single and scored twice.
Nin Burns had a two-run single and scored, while Mayson Baez had an RBI base hit and scored a run.
Damien Delgadillo singled, had an RBI double and scored.
Travis Hobbensiefken walked, singled, scored and had an RBI double.
Elijah Pelayo’s RBI single in the bottom of the second inning got Mt. SAC on the board.
Pelayo would come around and score on Burns’ base hit.
Will Bermudez walked and scored.
Trevor Caton singled and scored.
Up next: The Mounties and Wolverines will meet again on Thursday night at 6.
It’s part of the 11th Annual David Buttles Memorial Tournament at College of the Desert.
