Football:
The last time Village Christian won a CIF-Southern Section playoff football game, tonight’s seniors were just nine years old.
And this group of Crusaders wanted to make some history, so they started and finished strong on Friday night.
Village Christian outscored visiting Cantwell Sacred Heart, 27-6, in the first and fourth quarters combined, and claimed a 35-20 victory in the first round of the D-11 playoffs.
But it didn’t come easy.
The Cardinals actually got as close as 22-20 as the fourth quarter began.
But as usual, Nate Bennett was the man.
The Crusaders sophomore threw for 294 yards and four scores.
Bennett connected with Ryan Dellutri on three TD passes, including an early 45-yard TD in the first quarter to extend the lead to 14-0.
Bennett also hooked up on a 27-yard scoring strike with Julius Oliver.
Dellutri had 131 total yards and those three scores.
Logan Everett carried the ball 24 times for 157 yards, which included a 19-yard TD run that opened the scoring for the Crusaders.
The Village Christian defense played huge, totaling two interceptions, two sacks and a fumble recovery.
Rudy Perez and Julius Oliver picked off one pass apiece.
Up next: The Crusaders will make the 155-mile drive to Twentynine Palms.
The Wildcats (8-1) defeated Miller, 33-6, in their first-round game.
