Baseball:
Glendora made school history with a second consecutive CIF-SS baseball championship.
Last season, the Tartans defeated San Dimas, 2-0, in the D-3 final.
And on Saturday night, GHS secured a Division 4 title with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Laguna Beach in nine innings.
With the game tied at 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth, it looked as if the game was headed for the 10th inning.
LBHS’ Dylan Yencho, who entered the game with a 0.94 ERA struck out the first two batters he faced.
GHS senior shortstop John Seader hit a line drive to right for a two-out single, but after the Breakers right fielder misplayed the ball, Seader advanced to second base.
With Seader in scoring position, Laguna Beach elected to intentionally walk Glendora’s leading hitter, Tanner Grable to face Santiago Garza, and in the hopes of setting up a force play.
Garza, though, clutched up and hit a line shot to left that dropped, and Seader hauled ass around third and scored to set off a massive celebration among the Tartans and a large contingency of fans that packed Goodwin Field at Cal State Fullerton.
Tanner Grable started his second consecutive CIF title game, and he went two-plus innings, allowing an unearned run on three hits.
Grable walked three and fanned three Laguna Beach batters.
Preston Tymchak, a sophomore, entered the game in the top of the third with two on and nobody out.
Tymchak recorded three consecutive strikeouts to get the Tartans out of the jam.
Tymchak provided three innings in relief, allowing an unearned run on one hit.
He didn’t issue a walk and registered three strikeouts.
Sebastian Lawrence retired all nine batters he faced, including three strikeouts just four days after going the distance in a 3-2 semifinal victory at Saugus.
Twenty of Lawrence’s 29-pitches were strikes.
Jude Garcia survived a two-walk ninth inning without giving up a run.
To be fair to the freshman, and if you’re looking through the lens of Glendora players and fans, it looked as if he got squeezed on what would could have been strikeout pitches to both Laguna Beach batters that ended up drawing walks.
Dylan Yencho had an RBI single in the top of the first and an RBI double in the top of the fifth to give LBHS 1-0 and 2-1 leads.
It pushed Yencho’s season hit total to 52.
Lincoln Adams doubled and scored a pair of runs.
Otis Boultinghouse went 1-for-5.
The No. 4 through No. 9 batters in the Breakers lineup combined to go 0-for-19 with nine strikeouts.
Aaron Crosby started and went three innings, allowing one run on two hits.
Crosby didn’t allow a walk and fanned a trio of Tartans.
The Laguna Beach ace, Branson Wade (11-3, 1.23 ERA & 105 strikeouts in 85 2/3 innings) went the final four of the 10 innings he was allowed this week after a six-inning effort in their 2-1 semifinal victory over Grand Terrace on Tuesday.
Wade was charged with one run on six hits.
He issued one walk and registered five strikeouts.
Yencho was charged with one run on three hits and a hit batter in 1 2/3 innings of work.
He walked one and fanned a pair of GHS batters.
Three Laguna Beach pitchers combined to walk two and strike out 10 batters.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Santiago Garza drew a leadoff walk.
With one out, Aidan Yamazaki reached on an infield single.
And Jude Garcia singled Garza home to tie the game at 2-2.
The Tartans would secure the walk-off win on Garza’s heroics.
Seader went 4-for-5 and scored the game-winning run.
Riley Cooper singled, doubled and scored.
Tanner Grable walked and doubled.
Garza went 1-for-4 with a walk, run and two RBIs, including an RBI ground out in the bottom of the first-inning that tied the game at 1-1.
Aidan Yamazaki was hit by pitch and singled.
Sebastian Lawrence singled in the win.
Of the four GHS pitchers on Saturday, Tymchak and Lawrence are sophomores, and Garcia is a freshman, so 2027 should be special.
Up next: The Tartans will compete in the CIF State playoffs on Tuesday, with an opponent to be announced shortly.
