Baseball:
Perhaps no sport is more confounding than baseball.
It regularly knocks conventional wisdom on its ass.
And it reminds this writer about the profound words of the late-great Rowdy Roddy Piper, that does, “just when you think you know the answers, I change the questions.”
Los Osos entered Tuesday’s Boras Classic at 4-7.
They had lost four in a row by a combined margin of 67-17, including a pair of Baseline League losses to Etiwanda, 19-5 and 16-2, respectively.
To make the hill even steeper, the Grizzlies faced off Tuesday with Huntington Beach, the No. 11 ranked team in California by MaxPreps.
That’s 332 spots higher than LOHS.
The Oilers were riding a 10-game winning streak.
But fear not, Osos fans.
Kyle Humphrey pitched his ass off in a 1-0 victory.
He tossed a two-hit shutout, walked one and fanned a trio of HBHS batters.
Fifty-four of his 88 pitches were strikes.
Dave Cunningham walked and singled.
And Owen Bone singled to account for the rest of the Oilers offense.
Cayden Hammond got the loss in spite of allowing just one run on two hits over six-plus innings of work.
Hammond walked one and struck out eight Grizzlies.
To make this story even crazier is the fact that Hammond took a no-hitter into the top of the seventh inning.
However, with one out, Wyatt Mohler singled and advanced to third on Moses Lanza’s base hit.
One batter later, and Dominic Rodriguez singled in Mohler with what turned out to be the game winning run.
Up next: The Grizzlies face Norco today (Wednesday) at 3.
The Cougars (13-1) are currently ranked No. 1 in the state by MaxPreps.
Their only setback (3-2) was a one-run loss to No. 2 Corona back on February 28th.
Norco defeated LOHS, 5-1, in the 2026 season opener on February the 16th.
Box Score:
LOHS: 0-0-0-0-0-0-1-(1)
HB: 0-0-0-0-0-0-0-(0)
