Tennis:
Oddly enough, after Tuesday’s lopsided loss to perennial Coastal League powerhouse, Geffen Academy/UCLA, the Minutemen left the match feeling confident about their ability to play quality tennis.
That confidence showed in today’s nonleague match against the Oilers of Montebello, despite wholesale lineup changes made by head coach, Arthur Hsieh, that were designed to make his players adapt to new situations and contexts.
Singles players were moved into doubles, while some doubles players were moved into singles, leaving the remaining doubles players to play with partners they had never played with before.
The Minutemen handled all the switching well, producing a solid and consistent effort all the way around.
Singles:
No. 1 Russell Sze – 7-5, 6-0, 6-1
No. 2 Wesley Schwartz – 6-2, 6-3
No. 2 Nate Schumann – 6-0
No. 3 Ben Forsyth – 6-0, 6-1, 6-1
Doubles:
No. 1 Reggie Park/Elvis Zhang – 6-3, 6-1
No. 1 Jayden Chow/Marco Lau – 6-2
No. 2 Cherif Sauma/Sam Crisman – 6-1, 6-0, 6-0
No. 3 Joseph Yang/Zach Amirian – 4-6, 6-0
No. 3 Zach Amirian/Daniel Chen – 6-3
With the win, the Minutemen head into Easter break with an overall record of 7-3 overall, while the Oilers drop to 1-8.
Up next: Maranatha resumes play on Wednesday, April 15, as the Minutemen travel to Santa Monica for their second league match against the New Roads Jaguars.
They overcame the Jaguars, 11-7, in their first encounter last month.
