La Salle Sweeps Village Christian to Secure Two-Time CIF-SS Championship Coach Tiare Tuitama Career Win No. 400

Volleyball:

The La Salle boys’ volleyball program helped their legendary coach secure an historic victory.

And they did so in dominating form.

The Lancers claimed a 25-19, 25-19 and 32-30 nonleague sweep over their visitors from Village Christian.

The win secured Tiare Tuitama her 400th career victory.

Over her career, Coach Tui has led the South Hills and La Salle boys’ and girls’ programs.

She’s the only current 210 Prep Sports volleyball coach with two CIF-SS titles to her name.

Tuitama led the Lancers to consecutive CIF-SS Division 1AA championships in 2012 and 2013.

It wasn’t counted in her tally, but Tiare was the co-head coach at South Pasadena when they clinched a CIF State D-6 title.

What makes Coach Tui special in this writer’s book is her willingness to express herself with tough love to her athletes with a 100-percent mission of helping her student-athletes advance on the volleyball court and life.

That hasn’t always been popular with arrogant helicopter parents who don’t like their precious son or daughter challenged or held accountable.

For the record, these are my words, not those of Tiare Tuitama.

Tuitama was a star athlete herself, as was her brother Willie, who was an elite quarterback for the University of Arizona between 2005-2008.

Tiare and Willie are also relatives of the late-great USC and NFL star, Junior Seau.

But back to Wednesday night.

Michael Park had 13 kills and a pair of solo blocks.

Cory Lai added 11 kills and two blocks.

Zade Abernathy chipped in with nine kills and three blocks.

Noah An produced 29 set assists and a pair of blocks.

Up next: La Salle will host Cathedral tonight (Thursday) at 5 in a Del Rey League contest.

Quotable:

La Salle coach, Tiare Tuitama: “It’s an honor to be celebrated. I am lucky to have the opportunity to coach young men and women in the sport I love. This milestone comes from my career starting at La Salle in 2011 and I spent a few years at South Hills. I want to thank both schools for supporting me over this run. I am also grateful to the student-athletes who work their butts off every day to be a better athlete, student and person than they were the day before. I share this accomplishment with you and all the coaches that have worked with me.”

Records: Village Christian (4-3); La Salle (6-5)
