College Sports:
One might think that winning a state championship would give you bragging rights over your siblings.
John Knott became a CIF-SS championship baseball coach at Bonita in 2012 with thanks to the right arm of ace Justin Garza.
And in 2025, the 49-year-old led Mt. San Antonio College to their first 3C2A title in 60 years.
Playing baseball for the Mounties is usually the top choice for elite area players and bouncebacks from D-1 schools.
With all that said, John’s little sister Tammy Knott Silva can match her brother accolade by accolade.
Tammy was the Female Athlete of the Year for the SGV Tribune in 1996, and one year later, she earned that same honor at Citrus College.
She was a three-sport letterman (volleyball, basketball & softball) at Gladstone High School.
Tammy went on to become a key member of the Citrus College volleyball, basketball and track & field programs in 1996-97.
Knott-Silva earned the title of Foothill Conference MVP as a freshman in volleyball after leading the state in kills.
In spite of not having competed in track, she finished second in conference in the javelin.
She would then play NCAA Division 1 volleyball and basketball at Southeastern Louisiana University.
While currently serving as the Associate AD at Mt. SAC, Mrs. Knott-Silva was inducted into the 2025 Citrus College Athletics Hall of Fame.
Fast forward one year, and it was announced today that Tammy will be inducted into the 2026 Pasadena City College Hall of Fame as the head volleyball coach.
The following is part of PCC’s announcement of the Class of 2026 by SID Robert Lewis, who is retiring in August after 35 years of being what this writer and many others consider the best sports information director in the state.
Tammy Silva, Women’s Volleyball Head Coach, 2007-2012:
Silva’s 6-year run as PCC volleyball coach was impressive. She took a program that won just four matches combined in the previous two years and turned it into a regional powerhouse. She made history in 2009 by directing the school’s first-ever South Coast Conference champion, setting PCC records for most victories, 23, and longest win streak at 22. That team dominated with 19 sweeps. She was honored as SCC Women’s Coach of the Year for all sports. She coached PCC to a second SCC crown in 2012. Two of her teams advanced to the regional finals. Tammy’s final PCC record was 113-35 for a .764 winning percentage.
This year’s Hall ceremony takes place on Saturday, May 2, beginning at 11 a.m. on campus at Sexson Auditorium. The first Hall class ceremony since 2023 is free to the public and will also be livestreamed.
Mrs. Knott-Silva is married to her husband Shandon, and the couple have two children.
Savanna currently attends Mt. SAC, and Aidan plays football at Charter Oak High School.

Quotable:
Mt. SAC baseball coach, & Tammy’s brother, John Knott: “She has always excelled in anything she put her mind to. As a freshman in high school, she lettered in three sports. It was always something our parents put us in, but I was always so busy playing that I didn’t realize until high school that she was such a great athlete. Tammy had a talent to pick up sports and communicate well with others. She was an outstanding head coach taking PCC volleyball to the final four. Honorably, she stepped down to take care of first my dad when he became sick, and then later my mom who was bedridden. She put all her focus into them, and even though they both have passed, she was such an amazing advocate and help to them all the way through.”
Longtime PCC SID, Robert Lewis: “In a short period of time, Tammy turned the PCC women’s volleyball program into a regional power. When she coached during the cost containment period, the state tourney was a four-team event. She had two teams that would have made it to state in the current and older format eight teams. Coaching the first conference title in the sport in 2009 was a major achievement.”
Mt. SAC’s college sports publicity specialist, Kenny Walter: “I feel very fortunate to work under Tammy Knott-Silva at Mt. SAC. Her leadership and commitment to student-athletes make a difference every day. Congratulations to Tammy on being inducted into the Pasadena City College Athletic Hall of Fame. It’s a well-deserved honor.”
