Football:
Talk about postseason drama.
Seventy days after a 10-point home victory over El Camino, the Warriors and Mounties met up again in Walnut in the quarterfinal round of the SCFA regional playoffs.
MSAC took an early 17-0 lead, but to their credit, ECC made plays and took advantage of some Mt. SAC miscues.
On the final play of regulation, El Camino’s Christian Miran booted a 21-yard field goal to send the game to overtime.
Damari Wiggins’ 25-yard TD run gave Mt. SAC a 38-31 lead.
Damonte Bias and the Warriors answered back with a 14-yard TD run and a 38-38 tie.
In the second OT, both programs missed field goals, including an El Camino attempt that hit the upright.
From the third overtime on, programs attempted 2-point plays until there was a winner.
Fortunately for Mt. SAC, Aiden Ramos and Bronseman Davis scored on 2-point runs in the fourth and fifth OTs, respectively.
El Camino matched the Mounties in OT No. 4, but the boys in maroon made a game and season-saving stop to secure a 42-40 victory.
MSAC had advantages over El Camino in first downs (26-25), total offense (502-460), passing (329-207), interceptions (3-1) and time of possession (48-42).
Hunter Herrera completed 16-of-22 for 200 yards.
Herrera tossed a 46-yard TD pass to Conrad Tuffly at 14:50 of the second quarter to take a 17-0 lead.
Herrera was also picked just before the half.
Daunte Bell was 8-of-11 for 129 yards, including a pair of TD passes and no turnovers.
Bell found Davis on a 32-yard score, and he hooked up with Tuffly on a 51-yard TD pass to extend the Mounties lead to 31-21 with 1:53 to play in the third quarter.
Aiden Ramos gained 103 yards on 25 carries.
And as mentioned, Ramos’ 2-point run in the fourth overtime forced a fifth period.
AR5 also totaled 44 receiving yards on five catches.
Damari Wiggins had the 25-yard TD run in the first OT, and he finished with 32 yards on a pair of carries.
Damien Smith scored on a 6-yard TD run at the 3:11 mark of the first quarter.
Tuffly, from Ironwood Ridge High School in Tucson, caught five passes, and he had game highs in receiving yards (132) and TD receptions (2).
Devon Anderson led all receivers with eight catches, and he finished with 99 receiving yards.
Davis caught two passes for 41 yards.
Kenneth Junger Porta began the scoring with a 44-yard field goal on Mt. SAC’s opening drive.
El Camino’s Jalen Moore (24-for-111) and Damonte Bias (15-for-102) combined to gain 213 yards on 39 carries.
The Warriors outrushed the Mounties, 253-173.
Bias had TD runs of 44 and 14 yards.
Andrew Maushardt completed 12-of-28 for 207 yards.
Maushardt tossed a 12-yard TD pass to Mark Baker and an 18-yard scoring strike to Brandon Jones.
Jones had six catches for 96 yards.
Nasjae Richardson, Blake Hiligh and Gavin Stewart all picked passes for the Mounties defense.
Teyondre Coleman and Dakota Mendoza had 10 tackles apiece to lead all defenders on Saturday night.
Nathan Maggiore, Kirikiti Maileoi and Jayden Murrietta tallied eight tackles apiece.
Michael Young had seven tackles, David Medellin finished with five and Richardson contributed five tackles to go with his interception.
Up next: The Mounties travel to Saddleback next Saturday at 1.
The Bobcats (9-1) are the No. 2 seed, and they had a first-round bye.
Their lone loss was a week-three setback (37-22) at Fullerton.

Quotable:
Mt. SAC coach, Bob Jastrab: “We were up 17-0 and things were looking good, and then we fumbled a punt, and they scored on the next play. We fumbled on a kickoff and thankfully we got it back. Even before the half, we had an opportunity to kick a field goal, and we threw a pick with two seconds left. The game could have gone either way. Both teams answered the other. It was two evenly matched teams and turnovers got us in trouble. I thought they executed much better in the second half. I’m very proud of our guys for battling through adversity and sticking together. Next week will be tough at Saddleback. They’re a very good football team. They’re balanced and disciplined.”
Mt. SAC running back, Aiden Ramos: “We knew it was going to be a dogfight. When you give the ball up offensively, we had to trust our defense to make plays. We have each other’s backs. We were actually happy we slipped and didn’t get a first-round bye. After two forfeits over the last final weeks of the regular season, it became difficult to find a rhythm, but we all worked really hard to control things we can control. We played El Camino earlier in the season, and we knew they were a good team. Everyone maintained a positive attitude throughout. We’re at the point right now and after that Ventura game where it’s not over till there are zero seconds on the clock. It’s (discipline/penalties) been discussed, and we can’t allow stupid mistakes to cost us a game. I’m really proud that we’ve cleaned up that part of our game, but there are many things we can improve on.”
Mt. SAC tight end, Conrad Tuffly: “Right now, it’s kind of surreal. It hasn’t really sunk in. I’m super happy for the team and the guys. I know how much everyone wants it, and it’s super rewarding to be able to pull this out. I am very grateful for everyone who has helped me get to this point. My family helped move me out here from Tucson to chase this dream. It’s super thankful that (quarterbacks) Hunter (Herrera) and Daunte (Bell) trusted me to go to me in those situations. We’re going to celebrate this win, but we’ve got a lot of work to do, and we’ll have to play better to beat Saddleback next week.”
