Tennis:
After a first round defeat in last season’s CIF-SS Division 5 playoffs with a young inexperienced team, the Lady Minutemen hoped to use that experience to advance to the second round this season.
Once again in Division 5, Maranatha was able to get off to a strong start today, winning 5 of 6 sets in the first round, highlighted by a comeback win by No. 1 singles, Grace Yang, who fell behind 4-0 before reeling off six consecutive games to win 6-4.
That win set the tone for Maranatha’s singles lineup, who swept the Raiders’ singles squad, 9-0.
The doubles duel proved to be more competitive, as the Lady Minutemen eked out the 5-4 advantage.
Three of those wins came courtesy of No. 1 Mia Huang/Mia Su, who swept their sets.
Up next: The Lady Minutemen (14-2 overall) travel to Santa Clarita on Friday to face the Golden Valley (13-5 overall) in the second round.
The Grizzlies defeated Chaparral, 15-3, in their first-round contest.
