Football:

One thing even the best coaches can’t control are injuries.

And Monrovia has been hit hard.

The Wildcats lost their sophomore quarterback (Jesse Saucedo) after averaging 255 yards per game over the first half of the season, including 13 TDs.

A couple weeks later, two-sport stud Troy Grise went down.

Grise combined to average 125 yards per game (rushing & receiving) and he scored six offensive TDs.

Grise also totaled 29 tackles for the MHS defense.

Monrovia has been forced to go from a balanced offense that averaged 487 yards per game (253 passing/234 rushing) to strictly a running team.

Through the first five games, the Wildcats scored 230 points (46 per game) and they enjoyed a 5-0 record.

Since then, Monrovia has dropped three consecutive games to South Pasadena (23-21), St. Genevieve (17-14) and La Canada (14-0).

MHS snapped that three-game losing streak on Friday with a 35-7 Rio Hondo League victory over their visitors from San Marino.

The Wildcats ground game erupted for 366 yards and five TDs.

They had two 100-yard rushers and averaged five yards per carry.

Byron Bell led the way.

Bell gained 243 yards on 12 carries.

And that included three TDs.

Dashawn Sieber carried the ball 13 times for 107 yards and one score.

Angel Morales only attempted two passes and completed both for six yards.

Lucas Martinez had a game-high 10 tackles to go with his rushing TD.

Rob Staples (8), Dominic Lino (7) and Kaleb Ellison (6) combined for 21 tackles.

Evan Huelster, Staples and Ellison had one sack apiece.

Zephyr Enriquez picked two passes and had a pair of tackles.

Josh Santos had four tackles and an interception.

Parker Wilson had a rough outing, completing 11-of-26 for 125 yards.

Wilson tossed one TD pass and three picks.

Miles Morning (13-for-62) and Wilson (14-for-56) combined to gain 118 yards on 27 carries.

Chase Mena had game highs in receptions (8), receiving yards (97) and TDs (1).

Emmanuel Samaniego had four receptions for 25 yards.
