Volleyball:
First-Round Playoff Schedule:
Although I’m a proud 1988 Glendora High School graduate, I take even greater pride in being objective.
Please allow me to back that up.
And if it seems like I’m not a fan of the current CIF-SS playoff formula in all sports, your perception would be accurate.
Case in point: Glendora and Claremont shared the 2025 Palomares League championship with identical 8-2 records.
However, the Wolfpack earned the two-match season sweep of the Tartans.
I went into detail last week explaining that if GHS and CHS ended up in the same CIF-SS Division, Claremont should and would get the No. 1 seed out of the Palomares League.
It seemed just a week ago that Claremont and Glendora were more likely not to share the same Division.
But when the postseason brackets came out on Saturday, there stood the Wolfpack and the Tartans in the D-3 playoff bracket.
Glendora, though, was awarded a first-round home game against Crescenta Valley.
The Falcons (23-12) are sitting at No. 166 in the most recent MaxPreps state poll, while the Tartans (19-10) are 122nd.
The Wolfpack (18-9) travel to Burbank to battle the Pacific League co-champions from Burroughs High School.
The Bears (24-8) are 132nd in the state, while Claremont is 134th.
With a win, GHS would have the tougher second round match, as they’d likely face top-seeded South Torrance (24-9 & 102nd in state poll).
If CHS earns a first-round victory, the Wolfpack would face the winner of Tuesday’s Corona del Mar (15-13, 129th)-Mayfield (17-8, 137th) showdown.
Apparently going 25-8 overall and 10-0 in Baseline League play wasn’t good enough for a home match.
Los Osos (81st in state) has a first-round schedule from hell.
The Grizzlies travel to Santa Margarita in a D-2 showdown.
The Eagles finished 19-10 overall and the Trinity League’s No. 3 seed is ranked 14th in California.
The Baseline League’s No. 2 seed, Etiwanda (23-12, 63rd) travels to Redlands on Tuesday.
The Terriers (29-5, 44th) finished 10-0 to secure a Citrus Belt League championship.
In Division 4, the Hacienda League’s co-champs from San Dimas (23-9, 180) will host the Rio Hondo League co-title holders (La Canada, 18-18, & 169)
Meanwhile, the other half of the Hacienda League champs, Alta Loma (18-9, 267), will host Desert Christian on Wednesday.
The Knights (20-5-1 & 399) went 15-1 en route to a Heritage League title.
La Salle (22-8-1, 176th) went 10-0 in Camino Real League play and the Lancers will travel to Placentia to battle El Dorado on Wednesday in a D-3 showdown.
The Golden Hawks (21-11 & 107) placed third in the Freeway League.
Marshall (18-4, 12-0 & 394), who is coming off its first Mission Valley League championship after dethroning the 11-time champs from Gabrielino, has to travel to Charter Oak on Tuesday evening in a D-6 contest.
The Chargers (20-11, 8-2 & 396th) finished second in the Valle Vista League.
Northview (23-5, 9-1 & 237) got zero love for winning an outright VVL championship.
The Vikings will make a 142-mile bus ride to Ridgecrest to battle Burroughs on Tuesday.
The Burros (25-7, 6-4) finished third in the Mojave League, and they’re ranked 165th in the state.
Good luck to all of you!
