Trailing by 10 w/4 Minutes Left, Claremont Rallies for a 28-24 Victory at LOHS; Leeper Scored Three Times, Including 98-Yard Pick-Six

Football:

The odds of Claremont remaining unbeaten in week six got worse as the game went along.

The Wolfpack were without their star quarterback Brandon Coronado, who was injured in a horrific car accident.

And with just four minutes to play, their hosts from Los Osos enjoyed a 24-14 lead in the Sierra League opener for both programs.

But in the Jake Caron era, the branding of “we never give up” played itself out.

Claremont scored 14 points in a span of approximately three minutes to secure a 28-24 victory.

Los Osos did their part in turning the ball a couple of times as well.

Carter Montgomery, who filled Coronado’s shoes admirably, hit Doug Yegge on an 18-yard pass, and then Montgomery booted the extra-point through to pull to within 24-21 of LOHS.

With just over a minute left, Claremont converted on a fourth-down play.

Shortly thereafter, Montgomery got the ball to Max Leeper at the 3-yard line, Leeper turned to his left and entered the west end zone on an 8-yard TD that turned out to be the game winning points.

On the Grizzlies final drive of the game, Josiah Badger picked an Isaiah Guerrero pass to seal the 28-24 victory.

Of the 24 football programs that 210 Prep Sports covers, only Rio Hondo Prep (7-0) and Claremont (6-0) have yet to lose.

Max Leeper had a monster game in the win.

He caught a 55-yard TD pass and in his first game on the defensive side of the ball, the New Mexico commit returned a pick 98 yards for the score.

Montgomery completed 10-of-20 for 215 yards, including the two TD passes to Leeper and one to Yegge.

He was also picked three times.

Leeper finished with 100 receiving yards on four catches.

Kingston Fajardo reeled in six passes for 65 yards.

Yegge had six catches for 40 yards.

Tai Thompson gained 39 yards on 10 carries.

Jordan Fyffe led CHS with six tackles, a sack and one fumble recovery.

Josiah Badger had five tackles to go with his game-sealing interception on the final Los Osos drive.

Landon Davis totaled four tackles and a forced fumble.

Gabriel Alvarado sacked Guerrero and tallied four tackles.

Gavin Marine finished with a pair of tackles and a forced fumble.

Guerrero went 18-of-33 for 237 yards in the loss.

He tossed a 24-yard TD pass to Jack Abbott, and Guerrero scored on a 1-yard TD run.

Abbott caught three passes for 71 yards.

Kaidyn Garrett gained 83 yards on 10 carries.

Isaiah Stewart scored on a 23-yard TD run.

Devin Silva booted a 39-yard field goal for LOHS.

Quotable:

Claremont senior, Max Leeper: “After the crash, we rallied behind Brandon and in support of Carter. Brandon spent all week with Carter at practice working on his reps and reads, and then he did everything he could last night in the game to help Carter with his confidence and any suggestions he had. We had a next man up mentality and Tai Thompson and I played both ways for the first time all season. It felt great to contribute on both sides of the ball. I kept telling Carter all week that we had to play our brand of football, and our brand of football is never giving up. Even though we were trailing throughout, I told Carter that his time is now, and he made some big plays. It feels great to remain unbeaten. We knew what was at stake.”
