Football:

The Bonita football program continues to lose key players to injury.

And that trend did not end on Friday.

However, the Bearcats continue to get a first-class prepping by a very talented coaching staff, and the BHS athletes work their asses off each week and compete.

After spotting Schurr a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, Bonita went on to secure a 14-7 victory in Montebello.

The Spartans got on the board, as Mateo Carrasco scored on a 12-yard TD run.

BHS pulled to within 7-6 when Drew Apodaca scored on an 18-yard TD run.

The two-point conversion attempt failed.

Late in the second quarter, Cade Burbidge hit Matt Milazzo on a 21-yard scoring strike.

The Bonita freshman followed that with a two-point conversion run.

Ryder Grosenbach saved the day with a late interception to seal the victory.

Bonita blocked a short SHS field goal attempt and the Spartans blocked a Bearcats punt to set up their lone score of the game.

Burbidge completed 9-of-13 for 75 yards, including the TD pass and he was picked once.

Burbidge rushed for 34 yards on three carries.

Sebastian Vasquez was the workhorse for Bonita.

He carried the ball 20 times for 102 yards.

Apodaca gained 70 yards on seven carries.

Milazzo caught three passes for 50 yards, including what turned out to be the game winning points on his second quarter TD.

Jacob Maddox totaled 21 receiving yards on four catches.

Izik Rodriguez had a team-best eight tackles.

Both Parker Alexander and Maddox had six tackles, while Levi Gregorich, Adam Hodgson and Grosenbach tallied five tackles apiece.

On the field, the Bearcats are 3-2 and their defense has surrendered 70 total points.

In a week zero loss at Muir, BHS lost their stud Joseph Lara (RB/LB) for the season and quarterback Travis Lippert still hasn’t returned since leaving that same game late at MHS.

Up next: The Bearcats will recuperate during their bye week.

And on 10/3, BHS will host Colony in the Sierra League opener for both programs.
