Girls Tennis:
Thanks to La Salle tennis for this report:
The Lancers’ tennis team continues to shape its identity in the early stages of the season, with valuable lessons learned from both a tough 12-6 loss to Mayfield and a commanding 11–2 win over Duarte.
For head coach Javier Djeu, these preseason matches are about more than wins and losses — they’re opportunities to fine-tune his lineup and prepare for the challenges ahead.
“No one likes to cancel matches more than me,” Coach Javier said after a scheduled match against Marshall was called off due to heat. “Preseason is where I get to test out our doubles’ pairings, see the strengths and weaknesses of our singles players, and test our fitness. Luckily, the last two matches gave me a lot of data points to work off of. Pairings are looking good and fitness overall seems on par for where we are at in the season.”
The Mayfield matchup provided a clear takeaway.
“Playing the pressure points better — that was the only reason that match didn’t go our way,” Coach Javier explained. “We play a few points better and we win that match.”

The bounce-back against Duarte, however, showcased the team’s strength in doubles play — something that has long been a hallmark of La Salle tennis under Coach Javier.
“Since my first season, I’ve lived and died on the doubles lineup,” he said. “That day we swept all nine sets, which gives me a lot of confidence going into the regular season where I am going to depend a lot on them.”
The win also carried personal meaning, as it came against Duarte High School — Coach Javier’s alma mater.
Looking ahead, La Salle will close out its preseason with a match against Maranatha.
The focus, Coach Javier says, is less about the final score and more about belief.
“I’m mostly looking for confidence in that match,” he said. “Win or lose, I want to see my girls have the belief that they can win every single set.”
With one more preseason tune-up before league play begins, the Lancers are building the toughness and chemistry they’ll need for another competitive run.
