Tennis:
Thanks to Maranatha Tennis for this report:
It’s just been go, go, go for the Lady Minutemen, who have had more matches than practices so far this season.
With three road matches already played since last week’s tryouts, they have been envious of the facilities of their opponents, each with the luxury of 8 – 10 courts they can call their own.
But with the stress of being immersed immediately into competition, with the constant travel, and with playing their opponents on their home courts, the Lady Minutemen are bonding and becoming a team rather quickly.
Today’s match against the Wildcats of Monrovia was another step in the right direction, as they faced the best singles player and best doubles team to date in this young season.
The first round showcased the best set of the day, as No. 1 Grace Yang faced the Wildcats’ top player.
Yang had yet to get on track this season, starting slowly with a modest, 3-2 record, while No. 2 Sarah Fong and No. 3 Hannah Su had 5-1 and 6-0 records respectively.
Yang fell behind quickly, losing the first three games handily; but she stayed the course and fought hard to stay in the set.
Slowly but surely, her shots started to fall, and she started finding a rhythm not yet seen this season.
She worked her way back to 2-4, then 4-5, then 5-5.
The focus and passion she had been hunting for all season returned.
With all the other sets already finished, all eyes were on Court 1.
Yang completed the comeback with a thrilling 7-5 win, giving Maranatha a 5-1 lead.
Fong and Su each won their sets, 6-0, while No. 2 doubles, Madison White/Jennifer Chu (6-1) and No. 3 Mia Su/Diana Sarksyan (6-4) won their sets. No. 1 Mia Huang/Kathryn Khalil lost, 6-2.
In the ensuing two rounds of play, Yang continued her strong play, posting 6-1, 6-2 wins, completing a sweep, while Huang/Khalil also won out, 6-1, 6-1.
The rest of the team split their final two sets – Dora Wang/Peony Liu subbed in for M. Su/Sarksyan and went 0-6, 6-0; White/Chu went 6-0, 4-6, while Fong and H. Su went 6-1, 3-6 and 2-6, 6-0 respectively.
The Lady Minutemen (3-0) hope to continue their improvement next week, as they look forward to being able to hold three practices, with only one match scheduled.
Up next: On Tuesday, Maranatha will face their crosstown rival, the well-coached La Salle Lancers.
