Baseball:
Glendora needed a win in the worst way on Saturday.
With its three-game Palomares League series tied at 1-1, the Tartans welcomed Claremont to their field in the rubber game.
And GHS secured a walk-off 2-1 victory in nine innings.
Now, with six league games to play, Glendora currently sits in third place behind Ayala and Bonita, respectively.
They lead the Wolfpack by one-game in the standings, and they also own the tiebreaker.
Both teams got outstanding pitching.
CHS scored once in the top of the third, and GHS answered with one in the bottom half of that same inning.
In between the fifth and ninth innings, both programs’ shots themselves in the foot multiple times, and they both found ways to escape without any damage until that ninth inning.
Tanner Grable went 4 2/3 innings, and he surrendered one unearned run on three hits.
Grable issued one walk and fanned six Claremont batters.
Brayden Johnson got his second win of the week by providing 4 1/3 scoreless innings in relief.
Johnson scattered two hits, walked one and struck out six.
With two out in the top of the third inning, Ramzey Farah reached base on an error.
Luke Porras made the Tartans pay with an RBI double, and a 1-0 Wolfpack lead.
Porras finished 3-for-5 with the RBI.
Farah drew a pair of walks and scored.
Wyatt Green and Aiden Leslie had the other two CHS base hits.
Green went 6 2/3 innings for the Wolfpack, and he allowed an unearned run on four hits.
Green walked two and struck out eight GHS batters.
Brandon Garcia was stuck with the loss after surrendering an unearned run on two hits over 1 2/3 innings.
Garcia didn’t issue a walk and registered two strikeouts.
Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the third, John Seader reached base on an error.
Two batters later, Kai Zeits’ RBI single plated Seader, and the game was tied at 1-1.
Fast forward to the bottom of the ninth.
Brayden Johnson led off with a single.
Mason Danison hit into a fielder’s choice, and he was sent to second on a throwing error.
Aidan Yamazaki, the SGV’s leading tackler in 2024, hasn’t been hitting the way he’s capable.
But with a runner on third and one out, Yamazaki drove in the game-winning run with single to left-center.
Yamazaki is a character kid, and everyone in the GHS dugout and their stands hope this is the start to something big for the Glendora junior.
Brayden Johnson went 2-for-4 at the plate, including a double.
Danison singled and scored.
Sebastian Lawrence singled once in the win.
To put how well both pitching staffs did today, consider the following:
Green, Garcia, Grable and Johnson combined to allow zero earned runs, walked four and registered 22 total strikeouts in 17 1/3 innings.
Up next: GHS has a week off from Palomares League play.
The Tartans will host Silverado on Tuesday and Flintridge Prep on Thursday.
Both games have a first-pitch time of 3:30.
