Football:
Editor’s Note: The opinions in this story are completely that of 210 Prep Sports. I haven’t reached out to any Mt. SAC coach or player for their thoughts.
I’ll admit it.
I don’t fully get this.
Mt. SAC has gone 12-0, and they’ve earned a spot in this weekend’s 3C2A state championship at San Mateo.
The Mounties also completed their National Central Conference slate 7-0 to secure a conference championship.
And yet, when the National Central all-conference list was released, there wasn’t a Mountie listed as the offensive or defensive player of the year.
Bob Jastrab, however, did earn the Coach of the Year accolade.
Golden West quarterback Will Burns (158-256 for 1,857 yards, 22 TDs and 8 INT) and Cerritos defensive tackle Leroy Palu (39 tackles, 5.5 sacks) were named the National Central’s Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year.
In their seven conference victories, Mt. SAC defeated Citrus, SBVC (forfeit), Cerritos, ELAC, Orange Coast, Long Beach and Golden West by a combined margin of 294-85.
With no disrespect to either Burns or Palu, the unbeaten conference champs had candidates that arguably deserve those spots.
On the offensive side of the ball, Devin Miles was arguably the conference’s most explosive player and the definition of a game changer.
Miles carried the ball 184 times for 1,255 yards, which is third in the state.
His 15 rushing TDs are tied for second, and Miles caught 18 passes for 223 yards and two scores.
Keep in mind, Mt. SAC had an average margin of victory of 42-12, and Miles rarely saw much time in the second half.
And the Mounties only played nine regular season games on the field.
Had San Bernardino not forfeited in week two of conference play, Miles would likely be No. 1 in the state in TD runs and No. 2 in rushing yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, it would be difficult to argue against a Juan Salas campaign for the conference’s most impactful defensive player.
The Mounties defensive back was second to Darrel Tripline (61 tackles) with 52 tackles and he picked four passes.
That included multiple pick-sixes, and he was named the 3C2A So Cal Regional’s Defensive MVP after MSAC edged Riverside, 37-35, last Saturday.
Salas’ four picks is second best in the state of California.
With all that said, Miles and Salas wouldn’t trade a spot in Saturday’s state title game for any individual accolade.
