Football:
The No. 1 ranked junior college football program in California hadn’t played a game in 21 days.
And Mt. SAC legend Bob Jastrab acknowledged that he was a little uneasy as to how his Mounties would respond on Saturday night at Cerritos College.
Nothing to fear, Coach Jastrab.
Your program looked a lot like the best JC football team in the state.
Mt. SAC cruised to a 61-14 victory.
And they were intent on putting the game away early.
Within the first 3:01, the Mounties already had a 14-0 lead.
Best yet, MSAC got massive contributions on both sides of the ball.
It all started with a fantastic running back named Devin Miles.
Two minutes and 10 seconds in, Miles sprinted into the north end zone from 25 yards out.
Miles also took a Jack Benson pass 74 yards to paydirt, and his third and final score was a 35-yard sprint to give the Mounties a 42-7 lead.
Miles carried the ball 13 times for 104 yards, and he caught two passes for 109 yards.
Benson completed 11-of-15 for 267 yards.
He tossed two TD passes and one interception.
Along with the long hook up with Miles, Benson found De’shon Thompson on a 21-yard scoring strike with 19 seconds to play in the first half.
Benson also had a 1-yard TD run.
Jayson Cortes (5-for-60) and Samuel Green Jr. (10-for-55) combined to gain 115 yards on 15 carries.
Thompson totaled four receptions for 70 yards.
Pierce Brown and Jesiah Cornwell had two catches apiece for 40 and 37 yards, respectively.
Joseph Najarro caught two passes for 35 yards, including a 21-yard TD reception from Noah Fuailetolo.
The Mt. SAC defense doesn’t get the credit they deserve.
And that stops here.
The Mounties defense turned three turnovers into 21 points.
Julien Lopez recovered a fumble in the north end zone for an early 14-0 lead.
Juan Salas (69 yards) and Antonio Mayes (50) both had pick-sixes for MSAC.
Daniel Tripline led Mt. SAC with eight tackles, while Salas had five.
Brayden Hapner, Jaylen Crutchfield, Christian Rand and Nasjae Richardson tallied four tackles apiece.
Dylan Eldredge had a rough night behind center for the Falcons.
Along with being planted into the turf for what seemed every three or four plays, Eldredge completed 17 of 32 passes for 165 yards.
He tossed a 10-yard TD pass to Chase Grosfeld in the third quarter.
However, Eldredge was also responsible for the Salas and Mayes pick-sixes.
Cheo Medina, who helped lead Northview to a CIF-SS D-10 title, and an appearance in the CIF State title game in San Francisco in 2021, led Cerritos with 32 yards on seven carries.
And that included a 2-yard TD run in the second quarter.
Gavin Porch (6-for-62) and Grosfeld (6-for-54) combined for 12 catches and 116 receiving yards.
