Life is bigger than sports.

That reality was reinforced today as Whittier Christian played their first match without their beloved late coach, Scott Penner, who unexpectedly passed over the weekend.

Having been informed yesterday, the Heralds team struggled to process the news.

Heralds AD, Sam Polescu, opened the match with tearful words of Christian hope, perspective, and remembrance, of not only his coach, but his dear friend, as well as a prayer for Coach Penner’s family.

Both teams honored Coach Penner by wearing ribbons in his memory – the Heralds wearing white hair ribbons, and the Lady Minutemen wearing black ribbon bracelets.

MHS claimed a 13-5 Olympic League victory, but it felt so unimportant in the big picture.

Midway through the match, Penner’s daughter (a former college player and part-time assistant coach for the Heralds) arrived with her husband and Coach Penner’s granddaughters to support the team and to be with the players Coach Penner loved to coach.

Hugs and tears flowed, bringing community and some measure of healing.

As for the match, #1 Grace Yang continued her recent resurgence, sweeping her sets, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0.

#2 Mia Su and #3 Kathryn Khalil each won two of three sets, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 and 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 respectively.

In doubles, #1 Mia Huang/Madison White and #2 Diana Sarksyan/Jennifer Chu also swept, posting 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-2, 6-3 scorelines. #3 doubles was unable to garner a set.

Maranatha (8-3;1-2) will host the Heralds on Thursday in the second match of a back-to-back set. The match will be held at 3:30 p.m. at Pasadena High School.
