Thanks to Maranatha for this report
The upstart Lady Minutemen are gaining valuable experience with each match played against deeper, more experienced opponents.
Last week, it was league front-runner, Village Christian, which boasts the league’s best singles lineup.
Today, it was the reigning league champion, Valley Christian, which has the league’s best doubles squad.
That their match last week was a close one was predictable (Village won, 10-8).
Maranatha’s singles today won 5 of their 6 sets, with #1 Grace Yang and #2 Mia Su winning two sets apiece (6-1, 6-0 and 6-4, 7-5), while #3 Kathryn Khalil won one, 7-6(5). Khalil came close to winning another set, leading 4-3, before surrendering the last three hard-fought games, to fall, 6-4.
In doubles, Maranatha’s lone doubles win once again came from #2 Diana Sarksyan/Jennifer Chu, who earned the MHS’s only wins against Village Christian last week. Sarksyan/Chu rallied from a 4-1 deficit against Valley’s #3 to prevail in a tiebreaker, 7-6(3).
In the final set of the day, against the same team, #1 Mia Huang/Madison White, also overcame a 4-1 deficit to even the score, before the set was stopped at 5-5 on account of darkness.
The fact that the match against the league champs lasted nearly 4 hours is a testament to how close the match really was, and how much improvement MHS has made over the course of the season.
