Football:
The fourth and final season of the Jake Duronslet era got off to a rousing start.
Covina’s record-breaking and all-time passing leader had the offense in midseason form on Friday night.
The Colts cruised to a 51-14 victory at Cal High in Whittier in the 2024 season opener for both programs.
Duronslet completed 6-of-11 for 135 yards.
He threw for three scores and wasn’t picked.
Duronslet also gained 96 yards on five carries, and that included a TD run.
After Friday’s performance, Duronslet has 138 career TD passes, and he’s thrown for north of 6,000 yards.
JD, though, would be the first to tell you that Covina football is so much bigger than just their signal caller.
And he would be right.
Kwame Parrish had a monster week-zero game.
Parrish actually outgained the entire Condors ground game by 160 yards.
He carried the ball 18 times for 251 yards and three TD’s.
Matthew Olivas caught five passes for 118 yards and two scores.
Matthew Chavez reeled in a 17-yard TD pass from Duronslet.
Cal’s Ricky Gonzales III completed 15-of-32 for 194 yards.
That included one TD pass, and he was intercepted four times.
Devean Urrea picked Gonzales twice, while Seth Devers and Matt Chavez had one interception apiece.
Marcus Ramirez led Cal with 43 yards rushing on four carries.
Nick Coronado gained 26 yards on five carries and one TD.
Frank Gallardo had game-highs in receptions (9) and receiving yards (147).
Matthew Saavedra caught three passes for 25 yards, and he had the Condors lone receiving TD.
Up next: Covina will host Baldwin Park next Friday at 7.
The Braves (0-1) got smoked, 52-29, against visiting South Hills.
Records: Covina (1-0); Cal High (0-1)
