Football:
Considering it was a week-zero game, the Bonita football program looked pretty polished on Friday evening.
Bo Beatty and Steve Bogan might differ with that assessment, but that’s their job to keep their players humble, and to strive for as close to error-free football as humanly possible.
The Bearcats never trailed in a 27-7 victory over visiting John Muir in the season opener for both programs.
In the second quarter, and trailing 7-0, Muir’s Jason Brown picked up a fumble and brought it back 15 yards into the east end zone to tie the game at 7-7.
But that would be it for the Mustangs.
The BHS defense looked impressive, swarming the length and width of the field and pitching a shutout.
Travis Lippert got his first start at quarterback.
And while the Bearcats’ junior tossed an interception early and lost a fumble that turned into seven points, Lippert settled down nicely and managed the offense effectively.
He threw for 184 yards, including three scores.
If Friday was any indication, Dylan Robinson is going to have a monster season.
The 6-foot-3, 190-pound game-changer made a number of athletic catches and scored a pair of TD’s.
Robinson caught a 9-yard TD pass from Lippert to give BHS a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
With a 14-7 lead, Lippert and Robinson hooked up on a 22-yard scoring strike, as the Bearcats led 20-7 at the half.
Robinson had a game-high 75 yards receiving on three receptions.
Just before Robinson’s second score of the night, Joseph Lara took a Lippert screen pass 19 yards into the west end zone.
Lara led the BHS ground game with 70 yards rushing.
Drew Apodaca capped the Bonita scoring with a 13-yard TD run in the third quarter.
Noah Mikhail totaled 81 yards (40 rushing and 41 receiving on four catches) in Friday’s win, and he dominated at linebacker.
The dynamic duo of Mikhail and Robinson is something you should see at least once this season.
Isaiah Lazarus was arguably the defensive star of the game with a recovered fumble and sacking Keyon Mills twice.
Up next: BHS will host Ontario Christian next Friday at 7.
The Knights (0-1) had a rough night offensively, and they were handled by visiting Summit, 27-13, in their season opener on Friday.
MHS has a week-one bye, and they will host Charter Oak on September 6th.
