College Football:
Mt. SAC opened the 2023 season by running the ball down Mt. San Jacinto’s throat.
The Mounties claimed a 23-7 victory thanks to a 302-12 advantage on the ground.
Mt. SAC scored the game’s first 23 points and took a 16-0 lead into the break.
The Mounties defense was stellar.
In fact, they held the MSJC offense scoreless until Zach Zella scored on a 5-yard TD run with just 33 seconds to play.
The Eagles won the time of possession battle (35-25), but the bottom line is ‘scoreboard.’
Samuel Green led the ground attack with 135 yards on 12 carries, and that included TD runs of 2 and 31 yards.
The Mounties got on the board when Alex Flores found Dedrek Taylor on a 13-yard scoring strike early in the second quarter.
Diego Esqueda’s 30-yard field goal with 2:05 left in the first half gave MSAC that 16-0 lead at the break.
Flores completed 12-of-21 for 77 yards and the one score.
Nicholas Floyd gained 81 yards on 12 carries.
Hayden Lara and Zach Zella combined to go 24-of-52 for 223 yards for MSJC.
Lara was picked by Tyler Jones.
Juan Salas led the Mounties defense with a game-high 12 tackles.
Mt. SAC had seven sacks, including 3.5 from Reggie Johnson.
Up next: The Mounties travel to Ventura this coming Saturday at 6.
The Pirates earned a 35-30 victory at Saddleback in their season opener.
