College Football:
The 2022 season ended just over three weeks ago, as the Mounties fell, 45-41, to Fullerton, in a first-round playoff game at OCC.
Mt. SAC finished the season 9-2, but they were just one TD’s worth of points from being undefeated.
Back on October 22nd, the Mounties first setback was a 35-33 triple OT nailbiter at the eventual conference champs from Riverside City College (12-1).
Throughout 2022, MSAC was ranked No. 2 in the state, just behind RCC.
They got tremendous contributions in all three phases of the game, and when the all-conference team was listed, the Mounties had a combined seven players, including punter Ben D’Aquila on the first team.
MSAC quarterback Ike Udengwu III and wide receiver Jaden Allen earned first-team offense honors.
Udengwu completed 187-of-300 pass attempts for 2,604 yards.
He threw 25 TD passes and was picked six picks.
Ike carried the ball 64 times for 304 yards and four scores.
Allen had quite the season, catching a team-high 50 passes for 702 yards and three TD’s.
The next closest teammate in receptions was Lucas Moore, who totaled 26 catches.
Allen also made the second-team list for returning punts and kickoffs.
Mt. SAC defensive back, Anthony Hebert, finished with 41 tackles, one forced fumble, a fumble recovery and five interceptions.
Hebert returned two of the five for pick-sixes early in the season.
Daniel Tupuola had 27 tackles, including three for loss, and a sack at defensive tackle.
Cornerback Mason White contributed 37 tackles (five for loss) and five interceptions, which tied Hebert for the team lead.
Safety Lantz Russell had 41 tackles (2.5 for loss), a sack and two interceptions.
And punter, Ben D’Aquila, averaged 44 yards per punt, with a long of 71.
Mt. SAC freshman kicker, Diego Esqueda, was named to the second team.
Esqueda was 13-of-17 on field goals, with a long of 47.
And Esqueda made each of his 53 point-after attempts.
