Football:

It’s hard to get an offense going when you’re missing a starting quarterback and his center.

And it doesn’t help when an opponent blocks a field goal, a punt and scores a TD on special teams.

But that’s what happened to Ayala on Friday night.

A talented Citrus Valley program came to Chino Hills and handed the Bulldogs a 28-7 setback.

It’s Ayala’s first loss of 2022.

The Blackhawks got 14 first-quarter points and never trailed

On a positive note, Citrus Valley had great starting field position all night and the Bulldogs defense still managed to hold the Blackhawks to 12 points under their  weekly scoring average.

Alex Way filled in for Bryan Wilson at quarterback and completed 15 of his 24 pass attempts for 198 yards.

That included a screen pass to Marquis Monroe, who turned it into a 73-yard TD in the second quarter to get AHS to within 14-7 in the middle of the third quarter.

Monroe caught three passes for 85 yards.

Way also connected with: Dominic Alloway (2 catches for 14 yards), Anthony Hernandez (1-for-12), Lytallion Payne (2 for 15 yards), Bince Garcia (2 catches for 26), Drew Amico (4 catches for 28) and Elijah Ybanez (1 for 18).

The Citrus Valley D held the run-heavy Bulldogs to just 48 yards on 12 carries.

Marquis Monroe had 14 carries for 30 yards.

Citrus Valley’s Hunter Herrera completed 17 of his 27 pass attempts for 209 yards.

And that included TD passes of 21 yards to Gene Herrera, and a 27-yarder to Dominic Douglas.

Speaking of stellar special teams play, Joseph Mason-Pacheco blocked a punt, and recovered a bad Ayala snap on a punt attempt, and brought it back for a short Blackhawks’ TD.

Jelani McLaughlin blocked an AHS field goal attempt, and Kristian Johnson was effective with his foot as the CVHS punter.

Up next: AHS will host Glendora on Thursday night.

The Tartans (2-4) defeated visiting Diamond Ranch, 49-14, on Friday at Citrus College.
