Girls Volleyball:
Marshall Fundamental coach Jeffrey Thai wasn’t happy with the ‘flat energy’ and ‘poor passing’ of the Eagles on Monday afternoon.
After reading that statement, it wouldn’t be misguided to wonder if Marshall fell in a Mission League contest at El Monte.
They did not.
In fact, the Eagles swept the Lions by scores of 25-13, 25-20 and 25-21, and improved to 11-5 overall, and 3-1 in MVL matches.
Marshall tallied 35 kills, but also had 19 reception errors and 11 missed serves.
Thai’s disappointment in a victory speaks volumes about how much expectations have changed for the better.
In 2021, the Eagles won just three matches all season, and in contrast, four weeks into 2o22, Marshall has nearly quadrupled their win total from a year ago.
The stat leaders from Monday night include:
Lauren Sandavol had five kills, three aces and 26 assists.
Abigail Garibay chipped in with 11 kills and two blocks.
Rory Lorenz added four aces, a pair of kills and one block.
Journey Blueford chipped in with five kills and three blocks.
Evelyn Mkhitarian provided eight kills and Alexis Delgado had four kills and two aces.
Up next: The Eagles travel to Rosemead on Wednesday at 3:30.

Quotable:
Marshall Fundamental coach, Jeffrey Thai: “Regardless of what the score says, every member of the team agrees that we did not have our best performance today. Even though Lauren had 26 assists and continued to move the ball around very well, our energy was flat. The team put together a season-high 35 kills, but we were stymied by our poor passing. At the end of the day, our players kept fighting and came out victorious, but we must get back into practice and put together a better performance in our next match.”
Records: Marshall Fundamental (11-5, 3-1); El Monte (2-6, 0-2)
