Girls Tennis:

In their fourth consecutive away match to start the season, the Lady Minutemen suffered their third straight loss to fall to 1-3.

Yet, they continued to show improvement and are heading in the right direction.

Their hope is to be able to continue improving quickly enough to become a factor in the Olympic League title chase, when league play begins on September 20.

The big breakout performers today came from the #2 doubles spot, as Mia Huang/Mia Su stormed out of the gates with 2 straight convincing wins, 6-0, 6-2, before yielding to the Tigers’ #1’s, 3-6.

Huang and Su have put in extra hours together outside of team practices in an effort to improve.

Their improved play spoke for itself, as they played inspired tennis for the first 2 sets. Huang/Su’s sets were the only sets MHS’s doubles line up could muster up today, as #1 Kasey McCoy/Esmee Eaton and #3 Nelli Breuer/Marie Wolfrum each came up short in their efforts.

Even in their losses, their improvement was manifest.

In singles, #1 Stella Hsieh was in control of her first sets the entire way until she succumbed to heat-related issues and dropped her final 3 games to lose her 1st set, 4-6 to So. Pas’s #1.

Early in the 2nd set against the #2, she took a medical timeout for more heat-related issues.

Upon her return, she played more aggressively, successfully attempting to end points early on her way to a 6-2 win.

In her final set, it was evident that Hsieh was conserving energy, as she unexpectedly fell behind 1-3.

Determined not to let the 1st set repeat itself, she turned up her aggression, winning the final 5 games for a 6-3 victory.

Like Hsieh, #2 Natalie Arminak played 2 solid sets and had 1 set she wish she could have back.

She won her first set, 6-1 against the #2, but was unsuspectingly ambushed by the #3, failing to win a game.

Upset with her 2nd set performance, she was determined to play better tennis against the #1.

She did just that before bowing out, 3-6, in a highly contested set.

#3 Kathryn Khalil failed to win a set, but battled hard for 2 sets before being subbed out for alternate, Sofia Celis, who lost, but also continued her growth curve.

The Lady Minutemen will attempt to get back in the win column on Tuesday, September 13, as they visit the Blair Vikings.
