Baseball:
Loyola opened Mission League play in fine form.
The Cubs’ Joey Frey and Henry Boylston combined on a four-hit shutout and struck out eight.
Loyola defeated Chaminade, 2-0, on Tuesday.
Joey Frey went six scoreless innings to earn the win.
Frey allowed just three hits, walked one and struck out seven Chaminade batters.
Henry Boylston closed out the win with a scoreless seventh to earn the save.
He allowed one hit and struck out one.
Degan Hensley doubled, and Tyler Garcia, Nolan Mowry and Hunter Essang singled to account for the Chaminade offense.
Aric Berg got the loss, allowing two runs on five hits over his five innings of work.
He walked a pair and struck out five.
Adam Magpoc hit a solo home run in the fifth inning.
And Carson’s Chavez’s RBI double accounted for the other Cubs run.
Tino Valdez singled twice and scored.
Jackson Shea, Matthew Lee, Ryan Times and Luca DiPaolo all had one single apiece for Loyola.
Up next: Chaminade will host Loyola today (Wednesday) in game two of the three-game series.
