Girls Basketball:
What a run it’s been for Scott Wiard and his lady Lancers.
La Salle didn’t just make their first appearance in a CIF-SS championship game on Saturday night.
The Lancers won the CIF Division 3AA championship.
La Salle held a 19-18 lead at Cerritos at the break, and the Lancers outscored the Dons, 26-15, in the second half.
That was good enough for a 45-33 victory.
It was also the program’s 19th consecutive win.
The Lancers were led offensively by a couple youngsters.
Sophomore Audrey Chen had a game-high 17 points.
And freshman Kaden Cortes contributed 13 points.
Chen and Cortes combined for 15 second-half points, which allowed the Lancers to pull away from the Dons.
Onyekachi Nwanze led Cerritos with eight points and Emily Hosoda had seven points in the loss.
The Dons actually outscored the Lancers, 15-0, from behind the 3-point arc.
La Salle was 18-of-26 from the free-throw line, while Cerritos was just 2-for-7 from the charity stripe.
Ryan Riddle had eight points in the win.
Up next: La Salle will await their first-round opponent in the CIF State playoffs.
Quotable:
La Salle coach, Scott Wiard: “I’m so proud of our kids, they battled through tremendous adversity this year. We had two COVID-19 shutdowns, and multiple injuries throughout the year. They continued to believe and play for each other. I want to thank so many people that made this happen. I want to thank my wife, Cynthia, for being the best support system I’ve had. I want to thank my staff for the incredible work they did. And I want to thank my administration for their support this year. I work at a great school with great kids and great leadership. None of this would be possible without those people.”
