In the first matchup between Maranatha and Viewpoint in the modern era, both squads entered the match in rebuild mode after losing large portions of their teams to graduation.
It was an evenly fought match throughout, with the deciding factor possibly being the fact that this was Maranatha’s first match of the season, while Viewpoint had already competed twice, having already gone through the opening day jitters that the Lady Minutemen were experiencing.
It was an exciting and close match that ended with a 7-6 (4) doubles set that sealed the 10-8 win for the Patriots.
Though the level of tennis wasn’t at its highest, what transcended the match was the spirit of sportsmanship and mutual respect, as the two young squads played with an uncommon joy and vibrancy often missing in competitive sports.
The Lady Minutemen were led by their returning singles trio, Hannah Su, Sarah Fong, and Grace Yang, who each won 2 sets. Jennifer Chu/Peony Liu won 1 set before falling just short in that final set of the day.
Maranatha’s other win came from newcomers, Franziska Ries/Natalia Kalajian, who edged out their opponents, 7-6(6), in the opening round of play.
That win marked the first win of their high school careers.
Up next: The Lady Minutemen (0-1) next play at Pasadena High School on Tuesday, in a matchup of schools who share the same courts.
