Football:
Six days after dropping a 40-0 beatdown on their visitors from Jurupa Valley, Chaffey High School welcomed San Dimas for a week-one showdown between a pair of 1-0 programs.
And the Saints weren’t exactly the most polite houseguest.
SDHS dropped a 44-8 thumping on the Tigers.
CHS never made it a competitive contest.
In fact, their only score came on the final play of the game after the San Dimas starters had long left the game.
Chaffey opened the second half with an 11-minute drive, but it ended without a payoff, because the Saints defense held firm on a 4th-and-10 play to turn the ball over on downs.
The entire fourth quarter was played with a running clock.
In a 24-21 victory over Glendora last week, SDHS stud Jacob Gallegos didn’t find his way into the end zone.
Coach Dylan O’Leary said Gallegos was going to be more of a focus on Thursday night, and that proved itself out.
Gallegos had TD runs of 20 and 6 yards.
He also recovered a fumble and brought it back 37 yards for another score.
Gallegos accounted for 21 of the first 23 points.
The other two points came on a safety when a bad snap sailed over the punter’s head, and for a few seconds, it looked like the Chaffey player didn’t fully understand the scenario.
However, he finally attempted to kick the ball and the deflection went out of the back of the end zone.
One of San Dimas’ star wrestlers Michael Baeza caught a 13-yard TD pass from Kris Saris.
Lino Alvarado’s 25-yard scoop-and-score in the second quarter gave SDHS a 37-0 lead at the half.
The Saints final score was a 4-yard TD run from Gavin Westervoorde in the fourth quarter.
As mentioned, the Tigers got on the board on the final play from scrimmage.
Jaylen Jackson scored on an 8-yard run and the two-point pass attempt was good.
Saris completed 8-of-10 for 101 yards.
And that included the TD pass to Baeza towards the end of the second quarter.
Baeza caught four passes for 52 yards and the TD.
Gallegos carried the ball five times for 55 yards.
As mentioned, Gallegos had two rushing TDs and one scoop-and-score.
Up next: The Saints travel to Ontario next Thursday to battle Colony.
