Lamont Gooden’s third touchdown of the night with 3:15 to play all but assured Rancho Cucamonga will secure at least a share of the Baseline League championship.
The Cougars edged their hosts from Etiwanda, 28-21, in a battle of 2-0 programs.
RCHS will trounce winless Upland next Friday before a week-10 showdown with fourth-place Damien.
Gooden scored on TD runs of 31, 41 and 5 yards.
He carried the ball 25 times for 163 yards.
Trey Towns completed 9-of-13 for 159 yards.
Towns hooked up with Jerome Smith on an 18-yard scoring strike on fourth-and-goal to head into the half with a 21-7 lead.
Towns also gained 58 yards on six carries.
Jerome Smith caught four passes for 41 yards.
Semaj Smith had two receptions for 81 yards.
Richie Pope reeled in a 33-yard pass.
Johnny Fortune III had a sack and picked a pass for the RCHS defense.
Beckam Amare led the Cougars with seven tackles, including one sack.
The Rancho Cucamonga ‘D’ totaled four sacks and a pair of interceptions.
Landon Congalton completed 13 of his 19 pass attempts for 170 yards.
Congalton hit Chad Wakumoto on a 31-yard TD pass with 7:39 to play in the third quarter to pull EHS to within 21-14 of the Cougars.
On a fourth-down play, the Eagles duo would hook up again on an 18-yard scoring strike midway through the fourth quarter to even the game at 21-21.
Alexander Doucette led the EHS ground game with 64 yards on six carries.
Doucette scored on a 38-yard TD run with six minutes to play in the first half.
Wakumoto caught six passes for 84 yards and the two TDs.
Dom Diaz (3-for-17) and Jaidyn Shepherd (3-for-57) combined to catch six passes for 74 yards.
Etiwanda didn’t post their defensive stats.
Up next: The Eagles and Cougars will both be in action this Friday.
EHS travels to Chino Hills and RCHS welcomes winless Upland.
