College Baseball:

When the Citrus baseball players arrived at their Glendora campus on Sunday morning for the first time all year, they knew an historic season would come to an end without a pair of victories over Cypress.

The Owls and Chargers had eliminated PCC on Friday with one win apiece over the Lancers.

On Saturday, Citrus committed three errors that cost them three runs in an 8-7 loss.

That meant the Chargers needed just one win on Sunday to advance to next week’s Super Regional.

Unfortunately for Cypress, the Owls weren’t ready to pack their bags, and they claimed victories of 12-3 and 6-2, respectively.

Game One Notes:

Former Bonita stud Garrett Patterson went seven strong innings, allowing one run on seven hits.

Patterson issued a pair of walks and registered two strikeouts.

Sixty-eight of his 104 pitches were strikes.

Matthew Martinez got the final six outs, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits.

Martinez didn’t allow a walk and fanned a pair of Chargers.

Nick Dunch had an RBI double.

Cam Casado had a monster game one, going 4-for-5 with three runs and six RBIs.

That included a grand slam in the third inning and a two-run shot in the fifth.

Nick Velazquez hit a solo home run in the fifth and a two-run shot in the ninth.

Cole West singled twice and scored.

Derek Almeda walked, had an RBI single, a sac fly and scored.

Jordan Daniels drew a pair of walks and scored three times.

Jackson Gray walked, singled and drove in a run on a sac fly.

Patterson helped his own cause with two singles and a run.

Dominic Torres singled twice and scored.

Game Two Notes:

The heroes of game two included pitchers Tim Hudson and Gabe Buranasiri and the Owls leader, Jordan Daniels.

Hudson went six innings and allowed two runs on six hits to earn the win.

Hudson walked four and struck out seven Cypress batters.

Sixty-one of his 97 pitches were strikes.

Buranasiri provided three scoreless and hitless innings in relief.

He issued a pair of walks and registered two strikeouts.

Izaiah Posada had an RBI single and doubled.

Braden Ruiz had an RBI single in the fifth to tie the game at 2-2.

Ty Peters singled and scored.

Justin Tillar drew a pair of walks and singled.

Travis Curry walked and scored.

John Short had one hit in game two.

Rudy Carlos went 1 1/3 innings, and he was charged with two runs on three hits.

Carlos didn’t walk anyone and fanned a pair of Owls.

Citrus got to Cole Ferreira for three runs on six hits and four walks over 3 1/3 innings.

Jordan Daniels went 3-for-5 with three RBIs.

That included a two-run home run in the bottom of the first and an RBI double in the fifth.

On Sunday, Citrus out-hit Cypress, 28-16, including a 10-5 advantage in extra-base hits.

Up next: The Owls will travel to No. 2 seeded Santa Ana for the Super Regional beginning on Thursday in a best-of-three series that could run through Saturday.

Quotable:

Citrus coach, Andy Smith: “After a tough loss yesterday, the message was simple: great teams win in the postseason with their backs against the wall against great opponents. We knew we had pitching lined up ready to compete today. Garrett Patterson did what he’s always done: he led from the front. He set an incredible tone early in game one with an outstanding start. Hudson and Buranasiri were incredible game two as well. But the story of the weekend was the bats, in more than one way. Our hitters were out for blood today. Cam Casado and Nick Velazquez had some of the most incredible performances in a playoff weekend that I’ve ever seen. Derek Almeda and Jordan Daniels were outstanding as well with numerous huge at-bats. And I can’t say enough about the work of Jackson Gray behind the plate both games today. This is a really special group to coach. They believe in one another. They love one another. And they believe they can overcome anything together. On to another tough opponent this weekend on the road. Our guys are going to show up ready to battle.”

Citrus pitcher, Garrett Patterson: “I didn’t feel any pressure. I was really stoked to get out there and compete my butt off. I thrive on the pressure and I love that spotlight and intensity. It was a win or go home game, give me the ball. Early on, my cutter and curve were working well, and I was able to spot my fastball. After Cam hit the grand slam, I just felt an extra burst of energy from my dugout. Jordan is a leader and he plays hard every game. His energy is unmatched to anyone else I’ve ever played with. Tim Hudson came out in game two and gave us a chance to win. He went out there and battled the way we all knew he would.”

Citrus pitcher, Tim Hudson: “Patty’s impact is immeasurable to our team. He’s the field general behind the plate when he’s catching, he’s an elite stick when he’s batting and he can be an ace on any given day on the mound.
I was trying to clear out all the distractions and I was confident in the spot I was in. I couldn’t have drawn it up any better. From the bullpen, I knew my stuff was there. My fastball and slider were working. Jordan is an absolute beast at the plate. I always feel confident when he’s up in a big situation. I knew that we were saving Gabe for a while and when I knew he was coming in, I knew he was the best guy we’ve got. It was a weird feeling waking up not knowing if the season would continue, and we’re all happy and relieved that it is.”

Citrus first baseman, Cam Casado: “We had a tough loss on Saturday, and Coach Andy got us together and said our backs were against the wall and asked us what we were going to about it. We just came out with some extra fire today. Garrett was relentless for us inning after inning. He’s a great athlete and he’s been getting it done all season. I knew (my grand slam) it was gone right away and I was fired up to be a part of it. In game two, it was awesome to see Tim and Gabe keep us in it. I have confidence in our entire pitching staff. We’re going to keep out foot on the gas pedal.”

Citrus outfielder and leader, Jordan Daniels: “Patty from the start has always been a battery and we all fed off his energy. Tim and Gabe kept the ball low and stuck to their assignments. They stuck with their strengths. We call Cam our offense. He’s one of the best hitters in the state. We all have confidence in our guys and we played a lot of close games, and we knew we had a lot of work ahead of us, but there’s no one else I’d rather go to battle with. To do my part and help get us to the Super Regional, it means everything. We worked so hard all year. It’s been awesome. We have a very tight family. My message to my teammates is to play every pitch, every breath likes it your last.”
