Tennis:
In their most recent match – a 12-6 win over Santa Fe HS – the Minutemen were led by their singles squad, who won 8 of 9 sets.
Today, it was doubles’ that carried the torch, also winning 8 of 9 sets, to lead Maranatha to a 13-5 win over the Wildcats, who came into today’s match with a 3-1 mark.
Singles did their part by winning five sets, despite being swept by the Wildcats’ No. 1 player.
The day’s final two singles sets were thrillers, with No. 3 Zach Amirian staying cool under pressure to eke out a 7-6(5) win against Monrovia’s No. 2 player, and No. 2 Reggie Park coming within a questionable line call of tying his set, 5-5, on a deuce-plus-one sudden death point against Monrovia’s No. 1, before falling 6-4.
The day’s highlights include the first high school tennis victories for freshmen, Jayden Chow, Marco Lau, and Wesley Schwartz.
Schwartz got the start today and teamed with Ben Forsyth at No. 3 doubles, winning 6-1.
Chow/Lau subbed in for No. 1 Nate Schumann/Russell Sze after they won their first two sets, 6-1, 6-1.
Chow/Lau defeated the Wildcats’ No. 3, 6-4.
