College Baseball:

The defending CCCAA state champs took the field on Saturday afternoon hoping to avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of unbeaten Glendale Community College.

The Mounties had dropped a pair of one-run (7-6 & 10-9) games to the Vaqueros on Thursday at GCC, and Friday at MSAC.

Former Damien and CSUF pitcher Seth Sumner, and former Bonita stud Andrew Alva made sure the boys in maroon headed back to Walnut with a W.

Sumner went five strong, allowing one run on six hits.

He issued one walk and struck out four GCC batters in his first college appearance since Tommy John surgery.

Brock Foulds got the final three outs for the Mounties.

Former St. Francis slugger Jordan Viramontes went 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles, one run and an RBI.

Andrew Garcia drew a pair of walks, singled, doubled and scored.

Mike Bang singled, had an RBI double in the eighth inning and scored.

Tanner Teffs singled twice and scored.

Adrian Contreras went 2-for-4, including an RBI single in the third to give Glendale a 1-0 lead.

Diego Barajas was saddled with the loss after surrendering four runs (two earned) on six hits over five innings.

Barajas walked two and struck out a pair of Mounties.

John Trainor got roughed up for six runs (five earned) on six hits over 2 1/3 innings.

Trainor issued three walks and fanned one.

Alva had a big day for Mt. SAC.

He went 3-for-5 with two doubles, an HR, three runs and five RBIs.

Alva had a two-run double in the fifth to give the Mounties a 3-1 lead, and his three-run home run in the eighth stretched the MSAC advantage to 10-1.

Foulds walked, scored and had a two-run single in the eighth inning.

Nick Mejia drew a pair of walks, and he scored three times.

Jackson Giacone singled three times and scored.

Froilan Serna walked, singled, doubled and scored.

Jose Gomez and Moses Trejo singled and scored one run apiece.

Chip Mertz had an RBI single in the fifth.

Ryan Castro’s sac fly in the fourth got Mt. SAC even at 1-1.

Mario Cuadros drove in Serna thanks to an eighth-inning sac fly.

Up next: The Mounties host Taft on Tuesday afternoon at 2.

Quotable:

Mt. SAC outfielder, Andrew Alva: Seth had command and control of the game. He kept getting those quick shutout innings and it allowed us to pick up our bats and score runs. I didn’t feel any pressure at all. We’re a good team, and if we continue to play together, we’ll be fine. Brock had a huge hit and he’s a solid player. Jackson had three hits and I thought Noah pitched well in his first appearance of the season.”

Mt. SAC pitcher, Seth Sumner: “I went out there just giving the best version of myself. This is my first college start since I was at CSUF two years ago, so there were some nerves (post op Tommy John). My goal was to treat it like every other day and just go to work. However, I knew this win today would be a huge morale boost for the team and I really wanted to be able to deliver for them. I’d say I did a good job working my fastball to both sides of the plate, but bringing out the change-up after going through the lineup once was the difference maker. Alva was a huge factor in the win today. After tying the game at 1 in the fourth inning, I was hoping for at least one run to jump ahead. Alva helped take the pressure off my next inning with his two-run double. His three-run homer, later in the game, really put the final nail in the coffin to secure the win. It’s nice knowing I’ve got a guy like that in the lineup that’ll get the job done.”
