Saints’ Valiant Playoff Effort Falls Short Against La Canada

The San Dimas Saints saw their impressive playoff run come to an end, falling to a tough La Canada team in three sets (25-17, 25-20, 25-18). The match was a hard-fought contest filled with ups and downs for the Saints.

Sophomore Taylor Smith led the offensive charge with 13 kills, followed by Savannah Clelland with 10 kills and Jayden Hanson, who added eight kills and 17 assists.

The Saints battled throughout the evening, but it seemed that each time they built momentum, La Canada answered back.

“Our game plan was to attack their backcourt and make them play, and we were able to do that a majority of the time,” noted the coaching staff. “But the serving was very strong, and we could never seem to get ahead.”

La Canada’s aggressive serving consistently earned them crucial points, allowing them to maintain a lead despite the Saints’ persistent fight.

A Season of Championship Success

On the whole, the Saints’ season was a resounding success.

The team earned their second consecutive Hacienda League championship, and we secured a D-4 playoff berth for the second year in a row.

Beating crosstown rival Bonita for the 3rd straight year was also a highlight for our girls.

San Dimas was given the league’s No. 1 ranking over co-champion Alta Loma as a result of having lost fewer sets in league play.

Alta Loma received the No. 2 ranking and will compete as a top seed in the Division 5 playoff tournament.

Reflecting on the season, I expressed immense pride in the team’s accomplishments.

It’s tough because you know how much hard work the girls put into a season.

We’re not a very large school—less than 1,500 students—so to make a good CIF run is very difficult to do, and only one team ends the season on a win.

The program’s core philosophy shone through this year.

We really try to build a family atmosphere in our program, and my girls play together as one unit, win or lose.

There were a lot of tears in the locker room at the end of the evening, but words cannot express how proud I am of these girls.

That selfless mentality was evident across the entire roster.

We had 16 on the team this year. We started a freshman outside hitter (Juliana Picazzo) and a sophomore Oppo (Smith).  Jr. Neriah Bobadilla transitioned to middle from playing outside.

Playing time was very tough to come by, but not once did I have girls complain about not getting playing time.

They all took the mentality of working hard and getting better by making each other work harder.

We will be losing five starting seniors, including Jayden Hanson, Natalie Starkey, Savannah Clelland, Leanna Robledo, and Janelle Marquez.

Our younger players are already motivated to begin where we left off.
