Thanks to Maranatha tennis for this report:
After defeating the Olympic League’s reigning league champion, Village Christian, last Thursday, today the Lady Minutemen hosted league runner-up, Valley Christian, in a showdown of two similarly built teams.
The Defenders got on the board first, with a convincing 6-0 win at No. 1 singles over Grace Yang.
No. 2 Doubles Mia Su/Madison White countered that with a 6-0 win of their own, evening the match at 1-1.
No. 3 Doubles Diana Sarksyan/Dora Wang won, 6-2, while No. 2 singles Sarah Fong lost a hard fought 6-3 set, leaving the teams even, 2-2.
No. 1 doubles Mia Huang/Jennifer Chu got the best of their highly anticipated doubles clash at the top spot, 6-3, giving Maranatha a 3-2 lead.
All eyes turned to the No. 3 singles matchup, the day’s longest set, to see if the teams would finish the round even, 3-3, or if Maranatha would hold a 4-2 advantage heading into Round 2.
Hannah Su finally prevailed, 6-4, to give the Lady Minutemen their only 1st round singles win, as well as the overall lead.
Su and Yang headlined the second round of singles play with identical 6-1 wins, while Huang/Chu and Sarksyan/Wang contributed doubles wins, 6-0 and 6-3, to put the Lady Minutemen ahead 8-4.
The Defenders closed the gap to 8-6 with a 6-2 singles win, and a (6-0) doubles win; but it wasn’t too long before Huang/Chu and Su/White secured a Maranatha victory with 7-5 and 6-1 wins.
The final two sets were close affairs, with Fong squeezing out a 7-5 victory and Yang getting edged out, 7-5, after holding a 5-1 advantage.
It was a tough fight, as every player was needed and contributed to the win.
The teams will meet again next Thursday in a rematch that will undoubtedly be very competitive and very close.
With today’s win, the Lady Minutemen take a slim lead in the Olympic League race, holding a half-game lead over Village Christian.
Up next: The Lady Minutemen (11-0 overall; 2-0 in league) next travel to Whittier Christian on Thursday to complete the first round of Olympic League play.
