Football:
If you looked at the stat sheet on Saturday night, it would be easy to conclude that Pasadena City College trounced their visitors from Palomar.
The Lancers had advantages in first downs (28-16), rushing yards (142-58), passing (411-267), total offense (553-325) and the time of possession battle (37-23).
However, with exactly one minute to play, Furious Hoskins reeled in a 4-yard TD pass from KJ Chatham to pull the comets to within one (point) of PCC.
Palomar decided to go for 2 and the win.
But as they did all night, the Lancers defense bent but it did not break.
They applied just enough pressure on the Comets’ quarterback and receiver, and Chatham’s pass attempt landed on the ground in the east end zone.
PCC survived 24-23 and they improved to 2-1.
Palomar led three times on Saturday night and neither team had an advantage of more than seven points.
Max Grizzell had a remarkable effort, especially considering he needed help getting off the field late in the second quarter and did not return.
Grizzell completed 24-of-33 for 301 yards.
That included a 34-yard TD pass to Javery Mayberry and a 20-yard scoring strike to Ethan Hubbell to give the Lancers their first lead of the game at 14-10.
Xavier Buckles was behind center for the entirety of the second half, and he went 9-of-16 for 110 yards.
With six minutes to play in the third quarter, Buckles scored on a 1-yard keeper to regain the PCC lead at 21-17.
Just 20 seconds into the fourth quarter, Zack Hutchinson’s 23-yard field goal extended the Lancers’ advantage to seven points (24-17).
Dom Ezeonye’s 93 yards on 10 carries was actually 35 more than six Palomar rushers combined.
Hubbell had a monster game for PCC.
He caught 11 passes for 187 yards and the one score.
Mayberry reeled in four passes for 80 yards and one TD.
Jagg Richer totaled 68 yards receiving on four catches.
Coleman Morning led the Lancers with nine tackles.
Ethan Bowser (7), Jasun Ridley (5) and Zay Blades (4) combined for 16 tackles.
Former Rio Hondo Prep stud and two-time CIF-SS champion Caeden Holcomb intercepted a pass and tallied four tackles in the win.
The Comets had six first-and-goal scenarios, but in those drives, the PCC defense allowed just two TDs.
Palomar’s Chatham completed 19-of-38 for 267 yards with three TDs and the one pick.
He also led the Comets ground game with 27 rushing yards on three carries.
Hoskins caught seven passes for 139 yards and two TDs.
Vincent Landry had three catches for 37 yards, including a 7-yard TD pass with 59 seconds remaining in the half to give the Comets a 17-14 lead.
Isaiah Strong and James Coddington totaled nine tackles apiece in the loss.
Up next: The Lancers begin conference play next Saturday, as they travel to Canyons.
The kickoff is set for noon.
