Citrus Picks up Huge 24-21 Victory at San Diego Mesa; Brian Salazar Tossed a Pair of TD Passes for Owls

Football:

Last week, Citrus headed home from Orange County on the wrong side of a 45-28 decision to Saddleback.

And things didn’t look like they’d get much better.

The Owls were set to travel to San Diego Mesa to battle an Olympians program that led Mt. SAC for the first 40 (game clock) minutes of their showdown last week in Walnut.

But overlook Brandon Hayashi’s boys at your own peril.

Citrus got on their bus and left San Diego for the 121-mile ride home to Glendora with a massively important 24-21 victory.

The Olympians missed three field goals down the stretch, and they went 0-4 on field goal attempts.

The Owls trailed three times on Saturday, but Alex Hernandez’s 31-yard field goal with 1:04 to play in the third quarter turned out to be the difference.

Citrus outscored San Diego Mesa 17-7 in the second half.

Brian Salazar completed 22-of-39 for 252 yards.

He tossed a pair of third quarter TD passes, and he was picked twice.

Salazar found Jojo Enriquez on a 12-yard TD pass early in the third quarter to catch the Olympians at 14-14.

Less than three minutes later, Salazar hooked up with Jalen Thompson on a 24-yard scoring strike to once again catch SD Mesa (21-21).

Cameron Bateman had game highs in catches (9) and receiving yards (128).

Thompson finished with three receptions for 42 yards and the one score.

Keaton Morales reeled in four passes for 30 yards.

Keyonn Chatmann led the Owls ground game with 26 yards on 11 carries, including an 8-yard TD run in the second quarter.

Perhaps the most important stat of the game was that of discipline.

Citrus was flagged eight times for 56 yards, while the Olympians racked up 14 penalties for a ridiculous 168 yards.

Maddox Barrios had a game-high 12 tackles in the win.

Thomas White and Elijah Ybanez totaled six tackles apiece.

Up next: The Owls will host Mt. SAC on Saturday at 6.

The Mounties (3-0) secured a 37-27 victory over their visitors from El Camino.

Quotable:

Citrus coach, Brandon Hayashi: “It was a great team win. San Diego is a tough team and playing them on the road at their place doesn’t make it easy. It wasn’t the prettiest. We still have a lot to improve on, but our guys really battled it out tonight and executed on key plays. I’m extremely proud of them and how they responded after last week.”
