Thanks to Maranatha for this report:

When Head Coach, Arthur Hsieh, first started coaching at Maranatha in 2012, nonleague matches with La Salle were annual, drawing students from both student bodies for the crosstown rivalry matchup.

That tradition ended about eight or nine years ago, as the schools mutually elected to go in different directions.

Since then, both schools have experienced much success, with Maranatha winning CIF-SS girls tennis championships in 2014 and 2018, and La Salle winning their first CIF-SS girls tennis championship in 2020.

Both squads are in rebuilding mode now and are working hard to qualify for the CIF-SS playoffs this season. Led by Head Coach, Javier Djeu, the Lancers showed today that they are on their way.

Today’s match was a close affair that came down to the final round of play.

With still only four practices under its belt thus far, Maranatha changed their entire doubles lineup from the previous three matches, pairing partners who had never played with one another before.

That was a dangerous move for today’s match as the Lancers’ calling card is their strong and consistent doubles lineup.

The Lancers won 2 of 3 doubles sets in the first round, looking like the stronger, more seasoned lineup.

Maranatha’s lone doubles win came from #3 Mia Su/Dora Wang, 6-2.

The Lady Minutemen won 2 of 3 singles, however, evening the score at 3-3. No. 2 Sarah Fong and No. 3 Hannah Su won their sets, 6-2, 6-0 respectively.

The difference in the match came in the 2nd round, as Maranatha won 4 of 6 sets to put them ahead, 7-5.

The newly formed doubles teams started to gel, garnering two wins, with No. 1 Mia Huang/Jennifer Chu winning, 6-2, and No. 2 Madison White/Kathryn Khalil prevailing, 6-3.

In singles, No. 1 Grace Yang registered her first win of the day, 6-2, while Fong won her second, 6-2.

Huang/Chu kept their momentum going in the third round, with a strong 6-2 win, while White/Khalil battled hard before losing to the Lancers’ No. 1, 6-4, in the closest doubles set of the day.

Diana Sarksyan subbed in for Mia Su at No. 3 doubles. Sarksyan/Wang lost 3-6 in a well-played set.

In singles, Yang won, 6-0, while H. Su clinched the team victory for Maranatha with a hard-fought 6-4 win, in a set that only saw one break of serve.

The Lady Minutemen are now 4-0 on the season and have no matches the rest of the week.

They are looking forward to getting some much-needed practice in before heading into next week, where they will play three away matches in four days.

Up next: On Monday, Maranatha heads to the San Gabriel Matadors, who are 6-2 on the season.
