Football:
To borrow a line from the late-great Sophia Petrillo:
Picture it.
Citrus College.
It was halftime of the Northview-Glendora game.
The Tartans led 16-7.
After the halftime show was over, the players from both teams came back on the field.
Glendora started stretching in front of the west end zone.
But they were polite enough to allow four contestants the opportunity to attempt a 30-yard field.
Any of the four could earn a year’s worth of Chick-fil-A with make.
However, the first two guys missed pretty badly.
The fourth didn’t even get the ball off the ground.
And then there was Natalie Vasquez.
She went third.
Vasquez is a junior at GHS who plays soccer and field hockey.
She stepped up to the 25-yard line, thought about it as the football players were looking at her like “are you going to kick it or not?”
Vasquez knew exactly what she was doing.
And Natalie took this so seriously, that she had her cleats on.
As you’ll see in the video below, Vasquez was not only good from 30 yards out.
She might have made it from 40.
Both the Northview and Glendora crowds showered her in celebration of her accomplishment.
Approximately 20 minutes after the kick, GHS assistant principal Rod Tilton sought Natalie out of the crowd so we could do a quick interview.
And this girl was prepared and confident.
“I was really nervous because everyone showed up. But I practiced before at the high school with my dad. I knew I was going to make it. I knew I could do it without everyone watching, but there was the added pressure of all the people here.”
Congrats, Natalie!
On a side note, Northview would outscore GHS, 15-0 in the second half to secure a 22-16 victory.
