Boys Athletes of the Week:

Cooper Berry and Brandon Coronado had equally incredible week one performances for Maranatha and Claremont, respectively.

Berry led the Minutemen to a 49-7 victory over their visitors from Artesia.

And Coronado put the Wolfpack on his back in a 50-42 shootout win at Diamond Bar.

Berry and Coronado are junior transfers and they both accounted for more than 400 yards of total offense and six TDs apiece.

Cooper Berry had about as efficient a night as a QB could hope to have.

He completed 22 of his 25 pass attempts for 420 yards.

Berry tossed six TD passes and no picks.

He and Nico Vergara hooked up on scoring passes of 11, 20 and 25 yards.

The other three were 65-and-55-yard scoring strikes to George Pamilton and an 11-yard TD pass to Bradley Loiacono.

Through two games, Berry is 40-of-52 for 654 yards, including nine TD passes and one interception.

Brandon Coronado made his debut at CHS a memorable one.

He completed 19 of 32 pass attempts for 430 yards.

Coronado linked up with Kingston Fajardo on TD passes of 35-and-15 yards.

The former Tartan tossed a 22-yard scoring strike to Max Leeper and a 35 yarder to Tai Thompson.

Coronado also led Claremont in rushing with 77 yards, including TD runs of 3 and 1 yards, respectively.

He also scored on a pair of 2-point conversion runs.

Up next: The Minutemen host the reigning two-time CIF-SS champs from Rio Hondo Prep next Thursday at 7.

The Kares (2-0) outlasted Quartz Hill, 28-21, on Friday.

The Wolfpack will welcome Alta Loma on Friday at 7.

The Braves (2-0) are coming off a 20-13 victory over Los Osos.

Quotable:

Maranatha coach Rand Holdren on Cooper Berry: “Going into this season, Cooper was a bit of a wildcard. He didn’t have a lot of experience, but I knew he had the capability and work ethic to step in and fill the role. He has not only filled it, but he is excelling at it. He has shown tremendous poise under pressure, as he has dealt with numerous blitz packages already in the first two weeks. Working with him during games to problem solve has been smooth, productive and appreciated. I have been blessed with good quarterbacks in my time at Maranatha with Michael Martin (went on to play at Valpo) and Luke McNulty (went on to play at UNC Charlotte), but Cooper’s trajectory is currently at a faster pace. No doubt Cooper will be playing on Saturday’s, but until then, we will continue to grind and keep getting better. There is always something that he can be working on.”

Claremont coach Jake Caron on Brandon Coronado: “Brandon’s transition to Claremont High has been smooth since he already knew some of the students from playing youth sports together. Plus, he’s been able to build strong relationships with his new teammates in a short time period. Brandon’s first start was one to remember, and most importantly, we were thrilled to come away with a win. His stat line jumps off the chart, but what impressed me most was his calm demeanor and ability to overcome adversity. On multiple 3rd-and-longs and even 4th downs, he showed poise, kept his eyes downfield, and made the right throw. He has that rare blend of staying disciplined in the pocket while also being athletic enough to extend plays outside of it. I know Brandon feels like he can play even better as he gains more reps and as our playbook continues to evolve. He is simply capable of becoming one of the best student-athletes to wear the Pack uniform. In the classroom and on the field, Brandon is a unique talent and, more importantly, a tremendous young man of character. For us, it’s about working hard every day and continuing to build on the foundation we’ve set as a program.”
