Thanks to Maranatha for this report:
It’s been a whirlwind of a week for the Lady Minutemen, who had tryouts on Monday, and came into today’s season opener still sorting out who is who, and figuring out who should play where.
Those questions, for the long run, will still take a few weeks for the team to discover, but for today, they put forth a solid lineup.
Although things are still in a state of flux, the presence of their core returning players brought seasoning and stability to today’s match.
Coupled with the energy and enthusiasm of two freshmen, the team had good balance and synergy.
Returning at No. 1 singles was junior Grace Yang, who played like she has something to prove to herself this season, after not finishing last season the way she would have liked.
She registered two 6-0 sets before being subbed out for senior Diana Sarksyan, who won, 6-1, against an alternate.
The freshmen, No. 2 Sarah Fong and No. 3 Hannah Su, made their high school debuts in impressive fashion, winning, 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-1, 6-0 respectively.
The Lady Minutemen tried new doubles combinations today, with each team unfamiliar with one another.
Former league doubles MVP, Mia Huang, teamed up with fellow senior, Kathryn Khalil, at the No. 1 slot.
They showed flashes of solid potential, improving with each set, and finishing with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-0 scoreline.
At No. 2 doubles were senior Madison White and junior Jennifer Chu, who also improved along the way, finishing the day with an impressive 6-3 win against the Bulldogs’ No. 1 team.
Their first two sets were 6-1 and 6-2.
No. 3 doubles saw two of last year’s alternates, sophomores Peony Liu and Dora Wang, in the starting lineup.
They had a successful debut, winning two sets and losing only to the Bulldogs’ top team, finishing 6-1, 1-6, 6-3.
Up next: Maranatha (1-0) travels to face a strong Santa Fe team (2-1) on Tuesday, September 2. It will be the first time the two schools have face each other in the modern era.
