Baseball:

Glendora’s season finally came to an end on Tuesday.

The Tartans fell, 4-1, at Eastlake of Chula Vista, in the first round of the CIF State Division 2 playoffs.

But not before they made school history.

Consider the following: One year ago, Glendora went 9-18, and they finished in last place in the Palomares League standings.

It was their worst showing in nearly 40 years.

Fast forward 365 days, and the Tartans were the lone 210 Prep Sports baseball program (out of 31) to earn the title of CIF-SS champion.

GHS shut out San Dimas (2-0) in the CIF-SS Division 3 title game four days ago at Cal State Fullerton.

But back to Tuesday.

Brayden Johnson went three innings, and he allowed one run on two hits.

Johnson walked two and fanned five EHS batters.

Sebastian Lawrence was charged with three unearned runs on two hits and a walk over one inning of work.

Lawrence struck out one Titan.

Nick Gonzalez got the final six outs without any damage.

Gonzalez allowed one hit and fanned one.

Hamza Hatahet walked, doubled and drove in three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to give EHS a 4-0 lead.

Angel Laya walked, singled and scored.

Kalani Jauregui doubled in a run in the first inning.

Luca Penteriani walked and scored.

Jordan Gomez singled, while Austin Stroberg and Zowen Watson scored one run apiece.

Nick Romero dominated in six innings.

He allowed one run on three hits.

Romero issued two walks and registered 11 strikeouts.

Lucas Yriqui got the final three outs, including two via strikeout.

Mason Danison went 2-for-3.

He singled in the top of the fourth and stole second.

John Seader’s RBI single to right plated the Tartans’ lanky senior with their one run on Tuesday.

Tanner Grable doubled to account for the other GHS base hit.

One of the perks of having your own site is being able to say whatever you want.

And while I’ll always call it down the middle, I wanted to send a message to the players and their coaches.

As someone who graduated from GHS 37 years ago, and as a member of the baseball HOF, I wanted to thank you for representing your families, the school and our program with honor.

In terms of success, you went from zero to hero.

Even when things weren’t going your way, or an opposing pitcher hurled an insult, or someone told your muscular linebacker to get out of ‘my f****n batter’s box,’ you kept your head down and played with confidence and class.

You bought into Coach Lewallen’s (and his staff’s) philosophy, built an unbreakable bond with one another, and you will always be known as champions.

In an estimated 66 years of having a baseball program, only one other group of Tartans (2010) reached the heights that you did.

Congratulations to each and every one of you for writing your names and team into the record books.
