Baseball:

Had someone told you at the beginning of the baseball season that Glendora would meet up with San Dimas in a CIF-SS title game in 2025, you might have asked what they were drinking or smoking.

After all, the Tartans finished the 2024 season in the Palomares League cellar, and they secured just nine wins all season.

GHS finished in last place for the first time since Ronald Reagan resided at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

On the flip side, San Dimas spent the last three years successfully navigating their way through the elite CIF-SS Division 1 bracket.

Over that stretch, the Saints went 4-3 in the postseason, and they had D-1 playoff wins over Arcadia, El Dorado, West Ranch and Cypress.

Fast forward to 2025, and GHS (22-10) collected 13 more wins than just a season ago.

Glendora finished third in the Palomares League (9-6), and they defeated Bonita for the first time since 2018.

It snapped a 15-game losing streak to the Bearcats.

San Dimas began its first year in the Hacienda League having secured consecutive Valle Vista League championships in 2023 and 2024.

They went 20-0 in VVL games over the past two seasons.

SDHS also graduated a very strong senior class, including such names as Kody King, Jude Favela, Kasen Khansarinia, Rocco Regan, Landon White and others.

The Saints finished 6-6 in Hacienda League play, which placed them six games behind the champions from South Hills and one-game back of Colony.

The six league losses and the third-place finish was the program’s worst showing since 2005.

However, the grind that was the 2025 season allowed the Saints to drop from the Division 1 playoffs to D-3.

And they’ve made the most of that opportunity.

SDHS has playoff wins over Calabasas (6-1), Colony (7-5), Paraclete (5-0) and Beckman (4-1).

GHS claimed postseason victories over Citrus Valley (4-1), Yucaipa (5-1), Costa Mesa (2-1) and Temecula Valley (7-5).

In terms of the playoff seeds, San Dimas knocked off No. 1 Colony and Glendora defeated No. 2 Yucaipa.

They have two common opponents.

SDHS went 3-1 in games against Alta Loma and Bonita, while GHS won three of five against the Braves and Bearcats.

It doesn’t take a genius to recognize that pitching has led both programs to this moment.

Glendora has surrendered eight total runs in four postseason games, including just one run apiece in the last three wins.

San Dimas has allowed seven runs, including a quarterfinal round shutout over Paraclete.

James Rocha is expected to get the start for SDHS.

Rocha is 6-4 with a 1.89 ERA.

He’s issued 14 walks and registered 67 strikeouts in 64 1/3 innings.

The Saints sophomore has dominated of late, including his getting the final five outs in Tuesday’s win at Beckman.

Rocha finished what their talented freshman, Dean Brosterhouse had started.

Last Friday, Rocha tossed a four-hit shutout over Paraclete and struck out 10.

Offensively for GHS, John Seader: (.394, 26 hits, 24 runs, 7 RBIs & 2 doubles), Mason Danison (.338, 24 hits, 13 runs, 12 RBIs, 5 doubles & 1 triple), Aaron Jacobsen (.327, 32 hits, 11 runs, 17 RBIs, 7 doubles & 3 home runs), Jackson Glaze (.321, 18 hits, 13 runs, 10 RBIs & 5 doubles), Tanner Grable (.500, 15 hits, 6 runs, 6 RBIs & 1 double), Brayden Johnson (.318, 14 hits, 5 runs, 4 RBIs & 4 doubles), Kai Zeits (.274, 23 hits, 17 runs, 13 RBIs & 3 doubles), Tyler Obert (.257, 19 hits, 9 runs, 14 RBIs, 4 doubles & 2 triples) and Aidan Yamazaki (.216, 16 hits, 15 runs, 8 RBIs & 1 triple) have led the way.

Glendora is far more likely to take a pitching by committee approach.

Brayden Johnson is 9-2 with a 1.81 ERA.

Johnson has 24 walks and 101 strikeouts in 77 1/3 innings.

He’s 2-0 in the playoffs and he went four innings on Tuesday.

The Tartans could also go to Tanner Grable (4-3, 3.13 ERA, 16 walks & 33 strikeouts in 31 1/3 IP) or Aaron Jacobsen (5-3, 3.22 ERA, 3 walks & 30 strikeouts in 41 1/3 IP).

Sebastian Lawrence, the Tartans freshman quarterback, has been outstanding in the playoffs.

In consecutive wins over Costa Mesa (2-1) and Temecula Valley (7-5), Lawrence contributed three scoreless innings apiece, allowing two hits and striking out five.

Vaughn Coleman is the star and the leader of this San Dimas program.

Coleman (.315, 29 hits, 30 runs, 22 RBIs, 6 doubles, 1 triple & 3 home runs) enters Saturday’s title game with 100 career base hits and he’s been a part of 89 wins.

That’s 31 more victories than any 2025 Glendora senior.

But he’s got help.

Jayden Claros (.292, 26 hits, 14 runs, 13 RBIs, 1 double & 1 home run), Josh Calcanas (.290, 20 hits, 16 runs, 7 RBIs, 6 doubles & 1 home run), Jason Almeda (.289, 24 hits, 17 runs, 12 RBIs & 2 doubles), Ashton Romero (.281, 25 hits, 11 runs, 20 RBIs, 9 doubles, 1 triple & 3 home runs), Aaden Escarcega (.277, 23 hits, 13 runs, 10 RBIs, 2 doubles & 1 home run) and Jayden Medina (.226, 21 hits, 13 runs, 8 RBIs & 1 double) have all done their part.

In a statistical comparison, both teams average five runs per game.

GHS (.290) has a 33-point advantage in team batting average over SDHS (.257), but the Saints (1.90) team ERA is 0.49 better than the Tartans (2.39).

San Dimas (83) is ranked 44 spots higher than Glendora (126) in the most recent MaxPreps state poll.

Both programs have won four consecutive games, and over the last 10, GHS is 9-1, while SDHS is 7-3.

Good luck to both programs, and here’s hoping that local baseball fans will inundate the stands at Goodwin Field to support the Tartans and the Saints.
