Baseball:

Just when everyone wanted to count San Dimas out, the Saints have earned a spot in the CIF-SS Division 3 finals.

SDHS claimed a 4-1 victory at Beckman on Tuesday to punch their ticket.

The Saints scored twice in the top of the second inning, and they never trailed.

Freshman Dean Brosterhouse went 5 1/3 innings, and he allowed one run on three hits to earn the win.

Brosterhouse issued four walks and registered four strikeouts.

Sophomore James Rocha retired all five batters he faced to earn the save.

Rocha got two of his five outs via strikeout.

Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Kai Carney doubled in Beckman’s lone run of the game.

Carney went 2-for-3.

Sean Franco drew a pair of walks and singled to account for the other Patriots’ base hit.

Carter Head got the loss after allowing two runs on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings.

Head walked a pair and fanned seven SDHS batters.

The Saints touched up Vinnie Montes for two runs (one earned) on one hit and a walk.

Josh Calcanas went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI double in the seventh inning to extend the lead to 3-1.

Two batters later, Jeremiah Holmes laid down a safety squeeze to provide an insurance run.

Jason Almeda and Jayden Medina had RBI singles in the two-run second inning.

Medina also scored.

Aaden Escarcega singled and scored.

AJ Larios walked and singled.

Along with his RBI, Holmes also drew a pair of walks.

Jayden Claros had a pair of singles, and the Saints leader, Vaughn Coleman, went 1-for-4 on Tuesday.

Up next: The Saints will face off with Glendora on either Friday at Cal State Fullerton or on Saturday at Blair Field in Long Beach.

CIF will make that determination on Wednesday.

GHS outlasted their visitors from Temecula Valley, 7-5, in their semifinal round contest.

Quotable:

SDHS coach, Mike Regan: “I couldn’t be more proud of how these guys have developed and gotten better this year.”

SDHS sophomore, James Rocha: “It was the bottom of the sixth inning and the score was 2-1 with a runner on third and one out. I struck out the first batter and got the second to fly out. I came in and wanted to pound the zone knowing that I was going to get outs. When I went out in the seventh, I was just focused on ending the game. It was really exciting winning the semifinal game knowing that I get to play with my boys in the championship game on Saturday.”

SDHS freshman, Dean Brosterhouse: “My curveball and two-seam fastball were working the best for me today. Early in the game, I kept on falling behind in counts. As the game went on, I gained more confidence with all my pitches. Once we got that 2-0 lead, it gave me a lot of confidence. It feels really good when I know I have a great defense behind me. I trust in all these guys and I think we all played really well today. When Rocha came in, I had all the confidence in the world that he would be able to shut it out. All year long, he and I have had each other’s back since the start. When we got those two more runs in the top of the seventh, I knew for sure Rocha would go out and get those last three outs and that’s exactly what he did. I’m excited to see what the future holds, especially with James and me. It’s going to be a hell of a ride.”
